The 20mm, 1.8 lens arrived today...
Any suggestions for a fair focusing test...what level of sharpness should I expect?..

The Sigma 30mm 1.4, I got three days ago is going back for store credit...It didn't focus on 1/2" print type at 7 1/2 feet away...
It was 10-30% short of focus point nearly every time..

So, I want to test this Sigma 20mm 1.8 right away to be sure the lens focus motor sets up the lens appropriately for correct focus range...what say you?

I say shoot less letters and more real life sequences and see what you like and if it's sharp to your eye.

That's fair...I'll get the lens in my hands in the morning...I wasn't here today to sign for it... Anxious to see it and really want to keep it...got lots of uses for it...

Generally good advice. Shoot some real-life subjects first. If things look suspect, then get out some testing subjects (I prefer the battery test, do a quick search). Do keep in mind the size relationship of the camera's actual AF sensors vs. the little squares in the viewfinder so that when you test, you aren't fooling your AF system.

I'm curious as to the results that you get with this lens. I'm really considering getting another one myself.

Battery test it will be then, Tom...I just haven't decided at what distance...so maybe at a couple of distance ranges...

I'll review the battery test again to be certain to apply it correctly...Batteries I have, and a yardstick or a tape measure to go with it just for back up...

Message me, if you don't see the post on this thread within the next 48 hours...that will keep me on my toes...thanks

If the motor in this lens is in any comparable to the motor in the 30mm, people seem to either have problems with it at close range or long ranges, but not both - if that makes sense?

I've got my fingers crossed, that it is comparable to the Canon Lenses or close to it...

I'll take it for a walk around the house and yard, to get a truer sense before the battery test...

With the 30mm, I shot over 200 pics at a concert venue, before doing the focus testing again, to verify the outcome of the first 200...

Just got the Sigma 20mm 1.8...Took some pics for testing and comparing the lens to two of my other ones...and...

I'm content with these results...

However, my Canon 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM, at 28mm and set at ISO 1600 gets the same sharpness, or slightly better sharpness results with the IS, in indoor low light tests...

Here is a sample outdoor photo with the new 20mm 1.8 lens...It's pretty good... however the 85mm 1.8, is sharper in the center taking the same picture while the 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM at 28mm is approx. the same, not worse, with the distant shed on center...this is evident when the image is enlarged...

The Sigma auto focus on this lens is very good and plenty, fast enough...

Some EXIF info:
Auto Exposure, Tv 1/40, Av 16.0, Spot Metering, ISO 100, all else is set to auto...

Looks good at internet size, John. A little more shutter speed, and perhaps f/8 or f/11 will bring out even better results, I'd bet.

John,

It looks like you got a good copy. I really enjoy my Sigma 30MM f/1.4 and have gotten some great shots with it so far. If I buy another WA prime then the Sigma 20MM is a leading canidate :-)

While it's design is a bit clunky and the AF somewhat slow, Canon still has no answer for it. I can honestly say I don't think I'll ever sell my copy considering its speed and specs and very good IQ even to the borders. Petteri has a classic review of it here http://www.prime-junta.net …/a_Sigma_20_mm_f-1.8.html (external link)

who do you think of it compared to the 30mm

The 20 at f2.8 is close to the 30 at f1.4 in terms of center resolution. The 30 is quite a bit smaller (62mm v 82mm), has ring HSM/FTM, and just handles a whole lot better. They aren't really comparable, but the 20 has its use as a 20mm f1.8 lens that is also FF compatible, which makes it unique. I like both a lot, but I use the 30 way more.
