im more curious on how far you have to be from your subjects for portraits (nightlife, concert) stuff... between the 2

Not far at all: you can get a full body shot from close up...

A 6' person's full body shot from only 8' away, on a 30D...

The f1.4 speed of the 30mm is a dream...I'll consider another copy of one in the future...right now, I returned the copy I received last week, cause of sensor/focus issues...See my thread in Prerforming Arts under "The Machine" plays Pink Floyd...it's on the first page of the Topic.

The ("The Machine" - Pink Floyd) posting results are best from approx. 200 pictures...

seems some people have to send them in to get callibrated
any idea how far back you would have to stand with a 30mm?

Check "The Machine" pics out...the photos are all taken 3-5 feet from the stage, and the mike stands are an additional 4 feet from the edge of the stage...The stage is 4 1/2' above the pit floor...all shots were taken upward with the 30mm f 1.4...

I figured the stage height would throw you off a bit...

The pics are just 7-10 feet away from the guitarists, for the closest shots and no more than 15 feet for the furthest shots...

John - looks good so far with your 20. How's the IQ on large crops?

I got mine Thursday, but it looks like I'll have to exchange it for another copy - the left side of my images are very soft at f/1.8 and still not very good until f/5.6 or f/8. The right side is fine.

Tom, interesting find. About 2 years back I went through a similar issue with Sigma NY and my 20f1.8. They finally sent it to Sigma Japan and had them assess. I got a brand new one (after a few months time) and it is flawless. But it took some patience. Now I'll be keeping mine for a long time.

I'm heading that route too...only because It is a fixed lens and it is basically the same IQ as my zooms at the wide angle level...
I expected a higher resolution...

I've already asked the store for store credit and am getting a long L lens instead...

I have pondered sending it right to Sigma first, but I think I'll try another copy instead. If it's equally troublesome, then I'll return it for a refund and chalk it up to yet another ultra-wide expirement that failed.

The difficulty for me is that I'm using a 5D so I need the entire image circle.
