Earlier this week, a rare marsh bird was found in a retention pond beside a new development near where I work. This bird was a juvenile Purple Gallinule which is commonly found in Central and South America. In the Summer, they can be found as far north as Florida and Georgia but these birds are rare in Pennsylvania and more so in the Fall since they are warm climate birds.
An adult Gallinule is very colorful with purple feathers but I was glad to have had the opportunity to photograph even a dull-colored juvenile. It's quickly getting cold here so I'm sure it'll just be a matter of day before he takes flight and starts heading south.
