Although the Great Egret is common is a lot of place, they are on Pennsylvania's endangered species list due to their declining numbers in this state. I first learned of their endangered status when I saw up to a dozen Great Egrets in an ephemeral pond in a field behind the place where I work and did a little research to learn more about them.
That was several months ago in July. Although I was able to get a few pictures of them back then, they were a little too distant to get anything decent.
This afternoon, on my way home from work, I spotted a long Great Egret foraging in a retention pond in front of a big grocery store 10 minutes from my home. This time I was able to get close enough to get some decent shots.
Both were shot with the 30D and EF 300 f/2.8 + 2x TC.
