Quick snap at a new restaurant we tried out. Ambiance was cook, food... well that's a different story. For the price, it was awful.

This is a 100% crop from my brand new 85/1.2, shot wide open ISO100 1/4000s. I'd been reading about CA but didn't appreciate how pronounced it could be. All the spots are black of course, and the color range is amazing. If it weren't so disconcerting it would be pretty cool. Is this sort of thing correctable in PP?

I'd say that's what you'd expect from an F1.2 lens, but I could be wrong.. This lens obviously isn't going to perform perfect at the max aperture. I think that you could minimize it by reducing color on the area of the fringing. I'm pretty sure that all lenses do that in high contrast situations, especially wide open.

Just dropped by to remind people that I love this lens, and its been glued on my 5d. I've made it into an all purpose lens. Plus I get a good workout using the manual zoom :)

This is caused by Longitudinal CA or spherochromatism or bokeh CA (3 names for the same thing), and is normally not fixable in PP. You could try with DPP, to see if that correct sit at least partially. DxO does fix this partially too.

Personally, I find it quite charming, but then, most of the time it is not this pronounced, and it disappears when stopping down . An advantage i sthat you can see whether the camera/lensackfocuses o rnot; the correctly coloured part is where the lens focused, the OOF foreground high contrast edges in purple/dark red, and the OOF background ones in a greenish cast :D.

Kind regards, Wim

Thanks. The only lens I think that beats it is the 200 2L .
