Question:

I heard about the (low) speed of this lens and a friend of mine who's tested it told me that it's not any slower than fifty nifty (50 1.8 II) .. (which for me is quite fast for the pictures i take)..

any other opinions about the speeds for these two?

What kind of "speed" are you referring to? Aperture-speed? (fast/slow) Or actually AF (autofocus) speed?

I couldn't imagine there would be anything slower (autofocus-wise) than the 85Lii, other than the original 85L.

it does focus slow..

but you get shots like these !

from a recent wedding..

lighting was a single 580 EXII in a westcott soft box.. triggered by radio poppers in Ettl mode.. pretty simple but effective

light was camera right.

AF speed :)

No, it's definitely slower than the 50mm f1.8. But it's very easy to get used to, and to love. RARELY do I ever loose a shot because of slow AF, and probably I couldn't have made the shot with any lens. The only lens I've owned close to as slow is the Sigma 150 macro, because it had such a long AF throw and didn't have the speediest AF. But honestly, I think these two lenses (85L and sigma 150 macro) are slow for good reason: 1. they are more concerned with accuracy than speed 2. they both have very long focus throws (Sigma because of the macro range and accuracy, canon for accuracy).

So, no, it's not lightning fast, but it's really not as bad as some say it is. You just learn to pre-focus, and follow your subject as you refocus before releasing the shutter. You'll learn that even though it can't sweep back and forth through it's range as fast as other lenses, it can make smaller adjustments very quickly; so just don't let your subject get too out of focus.

The 85 1.2 AF speed is like an 18 wheel semi truck trying to merge into fast moving traffic from a near complete stop.
