Its macro time¡¡¡

Hi everybody. Im a new member for Spain and im looking to buy a macro lens.
Im between the Canon 100 2.8 and the Tamron 90 2.8 Di.
Ive been reading so many reviews at fred miranda, photozone etc... and it seems like the Tamron has better Iq in the corners but slower AF and worse built construction.
I would like to take some macros and portraits photos.

Can someone help me decide

You can also consider the Sigma 105 2.8.
I have it, is a very good and sharp lens.

I suggest the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro.
I chose it for the following reasons,
1. The Canon lens doesn't extend when you focus (Tamron and Sigma do in that focal range).
2. Canon lenses work great with Canon cameras.
3. Higher resale value (if your not happy with it).

I did and I am very happy with my best lens of my line up, the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro

If you ever plan to use either of the Canon macro-lites you should go with the EF 100/2.8 macro. Both macro-lites mount directly on the front of that lens with no adapter needed.

Thanks John_B i know those issues about the canon 100 but what impressed me most is that the canon macro is your better lens whith that gear.

AeroSmith very good point about the macrolite flashes i didnt know it.

I sold my Canon 100 Macro after I got the Sigma EX 150/2.8 macro (that comes with a hood and tripod collar.) Just wan't using the 100 Canon anymore.

Only the canon has:

1. Internal non-extending focus
2. Full time manual focus w/o having to flip swithches
3. Outstanding build quality
4. A long, excellent reputation from users

They're both very good, but the above cinched the decision for me.

I'm not going to post any samples, I'm sure you can find a lot of these on the Web (try Pbase.com), but I also recommend the Canon 100mm Macro USM. Even if the Tamron is sharper at the corners (something I find quite hard to beleive), in most macro situations the corners are out of the DOF anyway, so it's not that important at all.

I go for the Canon. How many macro shot do you see where the main subject is in the corner? In reality whether the Tamron's softness reported in that review matters will depend a lot on the type of shots you are trying to get.

Urbandancer, I was in exactly the same position as you a month or so back, torn between the Canon and the Tamron. I went with the canon for the reasons mentioned above, plus the fact I wanted to take shots other than macros (portraits etc.) so the USM woudl be a benefit. I would choose the Canon again, really pleased with handling and performance.

if your gonna shoot mainly macro then AF doesnt matter, you want to manual focus anyway...
I also agree with bibimagic about the Sigma 105mm, had it and loved it... getting the 150mm in the spring...
