Here is my version. Yours was a bit low in contrast and the other one posted was a bit too contrasty. I went for a natural looking color in the flesh but also on the sky for the type of day created. I also went for a step-mount in order to put him in the upper left 2nd quadrant.

Afternoon light is one thing but it looks like you have left it a bit to late. It needs a bit more bite. Crop it a bit tighter and remove the messy feet. But keep going I think you are ont eh right track

Cute shot. Excellent composition, focus and setting.
It does look a little flat though. The first edit was too contrasting and the second, while it looks betther, is still a little dull.

I also like the shot. I agree that the pic could be a bit brighter, but overall i like it. And personally the log doesn't bother me, but i can see the difference it would make if it were cropped out :)
