I am going to buy 500mm f4LIS in January or February 2007 for wildlife interes.
Now my question: is that lens good enough for sports as well?
I mean is it fast enough to catch some fast moving or actions?

well if it's not fast enough there is probably nothing else that will do, as far as i know it's one of the fastest AF's in the current EF lineup.

500 on a crop body is really out reach wise for sports. On a FF camera maybe. You need such high shutterpeed with f4 and 500mm that it is not the best idea for most sports but there are always exceptions. AF speed is super fast of course.

A 300 2.8 or 400 2.8 is generally more suited to most sports as I think of em.

For wildlife it is the best except for small birds which always need more reach.

It's great for both.
Though it's true you see mopre 300mm and 400mm primes on the sidelines of major sporting events, the 500mm is certianly represented as well.

As with wildlife frankly, forr sports it would be part of a two body set up. 500mm on monopod (tripod if possible) and a fast zoom on a second body over the shoulder.

Oh, thank you very much people.
as long i did some sports shots with my 70-200 f2.8L IS i can say it is good enough but if really i will go pro in sports then for sure i have to think about either 300 or 400. Now i have to focus on wildlife and 500mm only, i will have time later to get into sports more and get another sporty lens.
Thank you again and i will try that 500 later in outdoor sports sometimes and see how its working.
Have a nice time all!!! :)

would you mind to be one of those strong guys to help me then?
I have monopod and tripod so what is the point to say that.

he meant that you should hire people to help you carry all those lenses around. the fact that you have a monopod and tripod really won't help your gear become lighter.

ive seen some guys with 500 F4's out on the football field. the 400 2.8 is definitly the most popular field sports lens out there though.

ok ok
so just i will keep my 500 for my wildlife/birding shots, and 400 for sports, too bad if one lens can do both but no problem, it is life.
Thank you very much.
