I thought ND should decrease EV but no change in color except adding saturation to color. with cheap filters, you can get the magenta effect :P

(j/k)I'm not sure if you're shooting a FF or crop frame, so I'll address both. First, my suggestion would be the Lee foundation kit (holder), and a wide-angle adapter ring for the 17-40L (77mm size). That will enable you to use two of the three slots on the holder with no vignetting at the wide end on a FF sensor. The filter or filters you choose largely depends on what you want to photograph. If you're primarily shooting even horizons without mountains or other obstructions I'd suggest getting a .60 hard edge GND. This will reduce the "brightness" in the covered area of the scene by two stops which in most situations is enough to get some foreground detail. If you're shooting uneven horizons (mountains, buildings, etc.) you might consider getting a soft edge filter instead. The difference between hard and soft edge: With a hard edge, the graduation from the darker part of the filter to the clear part is more abrupt....it changes from dark to clear very quickly. A soft edge GND filter is much more gradual and thereby makes it easier to fit into the scene without it being visible in the final image. If you're going to get two... I'd get one of each. MOST of the time we would recommend getting a .90 hard edge (3 stop) and a .60 soft edge (2 stop). The way you described the skies you're going to be shooting however...I'm guessing the .60 2 stop would take care of it. If you can afford it, get both. Suggested filter brands are Lee, Hitech, or Singh-Ray. Some complain that Hitech imparts a color cast because it's not completely neutral. I have Lee filters so I don't know if that's widespread or not. Be sure to post some pics when you get started. ![]() I'm a bit late with this reply, I haven't been on here for a looong time! But thanks very much for going into so much detail, it's very helpful! I still don't have the filters, but was looking again at them today. Will get there eventually!
