Sori if I'm being knit picky but, GNDs are used to help balance the exposure. Using it in an HDR would defeat the purpose imo. Don't ya think?

If i didn't use GNDs then i can't get good HDR, i will never use HDR on bad shots in exposures, so i get it right first then play with HDR Galleries:

Nov 10, 2008 21:53 | #501 I love my ND filter. I don't leave home without it. It is a Cokin P series style Hi Tech no 9 ND Grad. i don't use the holder, I just hold it in front of and against the lens. Also I use my CPL with it. I have a couple of Cokin-P's that I keep in my gadget bag and use quite regularly. I have never found consistent advice on how to meter for a ND grad. I have generally been using my evaluative meter mode and sometimes adding EV compensation. (I can never figure out if this just defeats the purpose of the filter - dughhh). I have had a look at the EXIF data on the images in this thread, out of about 15 pictures where the EXIF data was available, 14 used evaluative metering and 1 used partial metering. Only three had any EV compensation applied (less than a stop). Yooper60 wrote in post #4999302 ![]() If someone out there is really bored and has some time, could he or she take a picture of a Cokin GND filter? Just a thought about metering, remember I'm a digital rookie here, wouldn't it work if you metered the sky and landscape seperately without the filter then choose which GND depending on the difference? Yooper has the right idea. Spot meter the two regions of the shot you plan on splitting the filter over, then whatever the difference is (in stops), you then choose the appropriate filter (I always average up, so 2.x stops=3 stops for me). From experience, any shot with the sun in the frame, you need at least a 3 stop GND.

I am looking for .6 and .9 GNDs both hard and soft. But BH and other vendors show Out of Stock and I was wondering how long these have been out of stock. I am going to Costa Rica on December 20 and narrowed my choice to Lee and I will wait if there is any shot to acquire these filters any time soon. Second choice is HiTech and the Z-Pro but I like the Lee system from what I have read. thx. Seems these are always out of stock. Tried to pull the trigger on this months ago and ran into same situation. Nevermind. Found what I wanted at Calumet Photo. Adam

Good kit, great price and seller. Derek

The person you talked to is a moron. Sure, you can take 2 exposures and blend them together in Photoshop or the like. But, I find it much easier to use my GND filters. I also think they provide a certain "balance" that blending doesn't...i.e. they look more natural.
