Yep, sounds about right for a working setup. Oh, and the "fastener thingy" is called an "adapter ring". ;)

Hi, and thanks for this very useful topic!

Just to double check, these three parts would add up to a working GND filter setup?

Cokin P299 Wide Angle Filter Holder
77mm "Fastening thingy"
Cokin P121 3-Stop Hard GND Filter

This would be for use with the EOS 400D with the Sigma 10-20mm.

Thanks,
-BrewsterPilot

Cokin gradual filters aren't really neutral...they'll add a color cast to your images. Spend a few dollars more for a Hitech filter...you'll be glad that you did.

I agree with that, but i had few shots i did in New Zealand where i was using 3 Hitech GND filters at the same time all together and i had color cast.

Went out for the first time today with my graduated ND filter, it was a little hit and miss with exposure-any tips?
I had been hoping for a little bit more cloud coverage too...
Here is a sample pic that may help others decide if they want a filter....but remember its my first attempt at using the filter!

Sometimes when it is very bright out the sun doesn't always work well in the picture. By that I mean that it can blow out that portion of the sky easily. Perhaps next time, take a shot with the sun included (if that's what you originally wanted), and then try it again with the sun out of frame. Sometimes it can make a big difference on the overall out come of the photo (brighter photo and more colour).

I used cokin GND's for almost every picture in these series: Click me

Sometimes the colorcast of the cokin grad works out nice actually..

Like on this picture i took a few weeks ago, it adds a nice purple color to the sky (2s exposure: the longer you expose, the more the colorcast will appear). As you can see, I use the colorcast as a trick.

Just playing around with the late evening sun and our shadows in Kaikoura, New Zealand

Wow, I finally got through this entire thread and now I have a new shopping list. Just gotta figure out what it is precisely. I am sooo excited about this. Living in the desert the skies are always wayyyyy brighter than everything else. Lots o sunlight. Thanks all for sharing your knowledge.

I'm pretty sure this has been covered, but I can't seem to find it within the post. Can someone tell me why I would want to buy the Lee holder and adapter instead of buying Lee P sized filters and a Cokin P holder and adapter?
