Good op missed. I had heard and read on here many times that the 100-400 with 1.4x gives less then optimum results. As far as birds in flight I think it's way too hard. Manual focus is not the way to go when you want a keeper of a flier. Or maybe it's me. But my static shots just do not cut it either. They look like they came from a cheapo lens.

It is my experience from close to 300 shots over two days that this is not the combo you want if their are other alternatives available.

This is the best I could do with it. Nothing suitable for printing at anything larger then 5 x7.

Advice welcomed.

The shot looks good to me. I have to agree the 100-400 w/ 1.4 is not for me either .

What on earth is wrong with that?

Out of your 300, how many did you actually get like this?

Manual focusing flight shots , especially flight shots coming at you is very tough. This looks pretty good though with good exposure, and DOF on the bird.

Very nice capture but I have to agree, having tried that combo before for in-flight shots, what a disaster.
