Hi,

I got my strobes out of the box at last and set them up in the spare room. No background , just a couch. I used my meter for the first time and to be honest was dissapointed with it telling me to overexpose mostly by a stop of two. It seemed to give better indications as to correct exposure when using reflective than incident . Is this normal ? I found that the setup of the umbrella on the left and the softbox on the right that gave the best results was if the left cheek indicated one stop below the right. Theres also a reflector overhead.

Are you sure you metered the room correctly and did you shoot a custom white balance?

Cute shots but they do seem a bit underexposed and WB looks to be off.

How would you meter it , incident reflected and if reflected from what part of the scene ,, the models face ?

IMO the second ones are much better exposed although if you wanted a "darker" look to the pictures, they may not be what you want. WB still seems off though.

yes, i agree about the WB , its just wrong , i set it at 5200K and forgot about it for the puroposes of the session which was really to get a feel for exposing non ETTL. To me on the camera what appears to you as correctly exposed looks bright on the LCD. I will do a few sessions now " trusting " the light meter and see what i learn. In terms of the custom WB.

For the light meter, you should measure the amount of light from the Main Flash, then depending on how much contrast you want, measure the flash from both lights and adjust the second until you reach the aperture you want.
For instance, 1:2 ratio of light is low contrast, so the main light would be measured at f/2.8 (example), and the combination of lights would measure at f/5.6. You would fire both flashes, and adjust the second unitl the total amount of light hitting the meter reached f/5.6. Remember to keep the meter pointed at the camera's position, not the light's.
The camera would then be set at f/5.6... the shutter could be set at 1/30 (it really doesn't matter which shutter speed you use since the camera will only see the image when the flash fires).

Once the lights are setup, have your subject hold a large white board and take a photo, then choose custom white balance from the menu and set it to that photo. You would then need to set your WB to custom.
