I need a hood for my kit lens. Where would I get one, who makes it, and how much would it cost? Or would it be better to sell the kit lens and buy a lens almost like it? If so what lens. thanks

Jacob

hi.. as for replacing the kit It wouldn't be a bad idea. I've been looking and plotting to buy the Tammy 17-50 f2.8... as for the lens hood I ordered mine through the retail camera store.. but i'm sure you can grab one online...

If it was me, I wouldn't buy a hood for the kit as it's probably worth half the price you can get for the kit lens. I'd replace it with either a Tamron 17-50 or a Sigma 17-70l.
Good luck. If you want to buy the hood, you can find it at B&H photovideo.

The hood you are after is the EW-60C. I only have one because it is the same model that I had on the 28-80 USM that came with my 15 year old EOS 500.

I really don't think it made much difference to be honest. It is so small compared to the 17-55 f2.8 IS hood! Save your money, and put it towards a better lens latter.

The kit lens does not warrant buying the canon hood - it costs about £17.99 in the UK, and all this for thin flimsy rim of plastic that wouldn't shade the front of the lens in a coal mine, let alone outdoors. As for protection - it's useless.

If you really want a hood, I'd suggst getting a generic rubber hood with a 58mm thread.

Regarding replacing the kit lens, I'd suggtest hang on to it for a while, and spend your money on lenses that improve your focal range. the kit lens is perfectly adequate stopepd downa bit - f/8-11 - and will serve you well enough. Get other lenses first - most people start with a tele zoom in the 70-300 range - and of these the sigma 70-300 APO macro is the best. Personally I'd say get one of these, get a 50mm f/1.8 and get a speedlite and a good tripod, that will give you a great start

CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff

ok, looks like i'm headed for ebay and looking at Sigma. I like their 70-300 lens and I haven't tried Tamron yet, are they about the same in quality and price? How much I most likely get for the kit lens, in almost perfect condition? Well i'm sure i'll come up with more questions. thanks

about $50 for a used kit lens.
The Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro has the reputation as being the best bang for the bucks consumer level telephoto zoom, so I'd recommend the Sigma over the Tamron. Haven't seen a single review of the new Di version of the Tamron lens yet, so I can't comment on that.
