It's a great lens - my favourite! - but unless your window is made of optical grade glass, that's not a great way to test the lens. Your mail box looks kinda soft....

It's wonderfully sharp lens - I love it as a portrait lens, and it's great for street candids too. focus is amazing quick and accurate. Gotta love that FTM focus, too. And with an extension tube or two it does great macro

its an AWSOME lens..I had it for a while till i got the sigma
was SOOO sharp wide open.

his image is probably soft cause he shot it at 200mm at 1/100sec

Great lens...its a true gem

Enjoy...that and the 17-40 are possibly the best value Canon lenses.
Sadly, many folks trade their f/4's for a much more expensive f/2.8's....thereby gaining lens speed but not much more IQ.

Try shooting at it without the window glass and on a tripod with cable remote. The 111 on your mailbox doesn't even look clear. Though I doubt it will still be like that without the window in front of it, if it stays like that, you might wanna compare it to some others' shots and see if your copy is sub-par. Regretably, QA is still kinda wavy on some of Canon's L lenses.

Great shots are like great parking spaces... if you're not quick, it's gone!
