Hey gang, we are heading to Cuba for about a week in Feb, 07, I wish to take one body and one lens, maybe two with me. I don't think I need a telephoto, do I? I was thinking to take my 17-70 with me. The 18-50 will be gone soon, so I have the Nifty, the Sigma and the 2 L telephotos.
We will stay on a resort/beach, but get out to town a few times also. I would like to take landscape photos of the local beaches and take pictures in the city too.

1 lens, wow, you are limiting yourself. I'd go out and buy the Tamron 18-200 Di, great lens, fantastic range.

i think u will kick yourself when you get there and realise how photogenic it is, there must be an option for you to take your whole kit but only take out with you each day what you need? It seems a bit silly to possibly waste such a chance.

Thanx guys for your input. I was thinking of my 70-200 also for street candids in Havana. Don't wanna take anything heavy, so the 100-400 has to stay home.

As the owner of lenses in your range; I'd say definitely take the 70-200!

I'd take the w/a, the nifty and the 70-200 for a great 'light' kit.

I have a few pair of pants like the BDU's that the military wear; except they are black. When I'm out walking around; I can comfortably walk with the 70-200 F4 in the pocket on my thigh. This means no bag to carry/advertise, I can feel the lens to know it's still there and if I want to change lenses, all I have to do is reach down.

Have fun and take LOTS of pix; I have friends that have gone and been amazed at the photogenic nature of everything on that little island with a big heart.

Have fun!

Depends where you are heading? We went to Havana, you need a portriat lens there and some coins (some people make money fromm being taken, although we took soap as it was scarce last year). In Zapata (Pay o Pigs) there is alot of birdlife, odd crocodile, insects so a tele and a macro would suit. I took the 18-200 and a 70-300 with TC, wished I had had 400mm or more for the birds. The rest is general landscapes, city and beach shots.

I think I do what Tom suggested. I take my Sigma 17-70 which is good for landscapes, cityscapes, closeups and portrait too. Take my 70-200 f/4L for street candids and birds that are in close range and a Nifty for backup or night shots...

I went to Cuba this summer and I had the worst experience ever...after cuban customs saw that I had a lap top, my 20D, 5 lenses, GPS, they sent me to a room for some questioning over 1 hour...so be careful.

Aztech, Don't worry, I grew up in a Communist country. I take one camera with the lens on it and the 70-200 in it's own bag. The nifty fits in my pocket or in the wife's purse! :) No laptop or any sort of GPS. May I ask what the electical current is there. I think it's the same as here, 115-Volts and the plugs are like North Americans?

Did you check this page before travelling there?

I'd take the 17-70 for general walk-about, but suggest taking the 70-200 as well - it's a superb lens for street stuff, and not too intrusive. You might also want the thrifty 50 for low light stuff - loads of atmosphere in dingy jazz clubs - and it surely won't take up too much space , the 50 would even fit in a pocket OK
