alot of my friends shoot Canon and they preach to me, that investing in 3rd party lenes is a no no. Even though one or two of them may suggest Sigma, they refuse to buy Tamron and Quantaray. Do Canon make the best bes lens for Canon or is there any other manufacture that can compare or even beat Canon in the glass/picture quality?

Personally I'd stay away from Quantaray.
Tamron and Sigmas are pretty decent!

Except, of course, the Tamrons and Sigmas branded as Quantaray

There are Canon lenses better than some Sigma's and Tamron's and some Sigma's and Tamron's better than some Canon's. There are also some Sigma's and Tamron's that perform very close to some Canon's in the same range for a fraction of the price.

You just need to determine the focal length you're interested in along with how fast a lens you need, then compare all of the brands to determine what your best value is. There are some pretty good review sites such as photozone.de ... or once you narrow down your selection ask here :)

Some people do preach that philosophy in a need to justify to themselves the amount it cost them for that high priced Canon glass.

Canon does make top quality glass, but there are some top quality lens that are made by Tamron, Tokina and Sigma that out perform the Canon equivalent and usually cost less than Canon.

So if people tell you there is nothing better than Canon they are not telling you the truth.

I buy all Canons, but that's because of bad previous experiences with third party lenses. Plenty of people here swear by the IQ of some Sigma and Tamron lenses, but I've never heard anything good about Quantaray. I don't think you can beat the build of Canon lenses, but that's just my personal opinion. I don't feel so strongly about it that I would gry to talk anyone out of buying a Sigma or Tamron - they're just not for me.

Generalizations do not work well for specific lenses. If you are looking for a specific type of a lens, lets say 100mm macro, then I'd research all the lenses and make your decision on the factors that are important to you and not others. Canon, Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina all make very good lenses overall but every makers makes gems and stinkers. Yes, even Canon. So get the best one that fits your needs/budget the best.

I have a friend that is like that too. He has a pretty good collection of L lenses including the 300 and the 400 2.8. All his lenses are Canon and he talks crap about anything else other than Canon.

Some people are like that, living with a very narrow DOF :D

I think 3rd party is just fine.I traded from 70-200L to the Sigma 70-200
all my lens are 3rd party and they are all very sharp and seem to do anything the more expensive L's can do at a lower price. I go for more bang for my buck more then being able to say i have an L.

Chris,

I bought my first non-Canon lens a few weeks ago...the Sigma 30MM f/1.4 DC EX w/HSM and it is a great lens. It is sharp, has great color/contrast, and is fast to focus. I bought this lens after researching and reviewing all the Canon non-L lenses less than 50MM. This one came out on top IMHO.

Practical experience with it has shown me that third party lenses can rival or exceed Canon glass if you select carefully. My next potential 3rd Party is the Sigma 18-200MM w/OS (= to Canon IS). What a wonderful potential for a walk-arounfd lens if the reviews and testing holds up :)

Jim -- I keep the Leica D-Lux 7 in the Glove Box just in case!

Glad to hear that you like your Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens because that's the one that I just ordered! It's supposed to come tomorrow. Makes me feel better! :)
