With any luck, I'll get one soon. I'm going to live by my own words. A new member here is also a published wildlife writer and photographer for our area newspapers and magazines. He's also one of thoes "one in a million" real life nature dudes who knows more about whats in the woods than he does about whats in his living room. I'm going to get him to teach me. :D

Hey, no fair, who is going to teach me in Los Angeles  j/k

[QUOTE=Gary Fairhead;2095133]Patience is certainly a requirement as there are no garantees you will find an owl even if you are in an area where you know they should be or where they have been seen and reported.. Great Horned Owls can blend in pretty well especially when they get up high in the pines. Other Owls blend in well with their environments as well...I would very much like to see and photograph a Sawhett Owl but I have never seen one even though they are in our area. canondslruser gave you some excellent advice and this from a photographer who has a lot of experience with owls. Others here have done the same.

I wholeheartedly agree about Saw Whets. Actually one of the bird books I have says they are ridiculously tame. You can approach and even handle them. Other books hint at the same. Of course you have to find them first which is probably easier said than done. They do look like cute little fellers in their pictures though.:)

Bob

I'll try and keep a running documentary then.

Even with help, it's still chance and a lot of sitting around. :)

I am a little south of Nashville .... I took these in March and that is when I say them the most.... If you really are thinking about it for next year we can do it.... I actually took the first one from the driver seat of my car right off the road... I went back every day for about a week and they were there... I could only see two in one day.... In the same area I also shot this fella....

Cat, closer for you to go north. There are plenty in the mountains of northern California, Oregon and Washington.
