Met up with 2 members of my local photographers club; one of them works on campus.

We received a pleasant surprise by being escorted out ONTO the parade grounds and having a cadet by our side at all times.

(Having my 100-400 out and on a mono-pod helped :p )

For those not familiar with game day Saturdays at West Point, there's a parade of cadets, review by the commandant, USMA parade band, parachute club demos, 'copter flybys and the like
before kick-off.....BTW..they murdered VMI 62-7

Comments and critiques if the mood strikes

Nice shots. Everyone looks so serious, but I guess that comes with the job. I was wondering if this was in conjunction with yesterday's game.

Thanks for sharing.

Um...err...em...ah...

My original post says that these events happen on "game day"; and every home football game played in Michie Stadium at West Point.

Thanks for looking!

Best,

Tom D

I enjoyed looking at every photo. Really interesting glimpses of life at one of the world's famous military establishments. :-)

You are fortunate because since 9/11 West Point is off limits, and when you are allowed in your camera gear is confiscated until you leave (and you better go out the same way you came in or you may loose it), all in the name of national security. I have tried three times to go in with my wife and twice we were turned back, the third time I was allowed in because I had an invitation to my cousins graduation, but my camera gear had to be left at the gate, they did issue a stub for claiming it back but it was a rough three hours for me (Separation anxiety you know). Btw, they checked our phones as well for cameras in them.

Thanks for all the nice comments...'tis appreciated....

As far as West Point being off-limits, I guess the Point is either very inconsistent, or I'm very, very lucky...

I've been on campus a couple of times this year without incident or confiscation of my gear.

I will admit that I have another friend that was a contractor there, but there were never any "strings pulled" or any special arrangements made.

When approached by the MPs, I would state where I was going (hospital, cadet chapel, et al) and I was allowed to pass.

It could also be the gate you went it? I'm going to venture a guess and say you went in through Thayer Gate? You might want to try Stoney Lonesome or Washington gate.

Also, visiting on game day is pretty accessible. You might have to walk A LOT (uphill for a good part especially if you park near Shea Stadium), but you won't be bothered.

I'd also be curious as to when the last time you tried to visit, and the year of your cousin's graduation. They do seem to be a bit more flexible the past 2 years or so.

Trust me, I've been in your shoes....

I used to tail-gate at the Point for the home football opener for about 5 years; pre- and post-9/11. Post-9/11, I had numerous M-16's pointed in my face as well as pat-downs and full vehicle searches.

This happened to *everyone*; I wasn't "profiled" or anything like that....

Bleh...

Best,

Tom D

LOL!

You ever been on the USMA campus?

The Athletic building has "Beat Air Force"
on one side of the roof and "Sink Navy" on
the other :)

Its all in the geography....heh

I have a first cousin by marriage that graduated from Annapolis and was 2nd string quarterback to Roger Staubach for Navy football....my cousin's son graduated from there as well, and I think is an Apache instructor...

Go Army! LOL!

Best,

Tom D

Her graduation date was last year and the last time before that was 2 yrs before, and yes THayer gate was the approach, its been the only one I have ever used in the past and never thought to try it through another gate.

Great job. I had the honor and privilege of attending last Saturday's Army v.s. Temple game at West Point. It was my first time there. It is an amazing place. I had no problem getting in with my camera gear. I will post some up soon.
