Absolutely agree with ya there, 100%. My next lens purchase will be a telephoto w/ 1.4x TC, either the 70-200 F/4 or the 200 F/2.8.

I used the Canon white one, The EF 1.4 Extender MKII. They are not that much on B&H's website for the best of the best TC and it is the same color as the lens. And has the highest resale value should you find yourself never using it.

Well; another thing to think about when comparing the different Mfr's is this:

-With the canon TX; your Exif will be correct and your IQ is excellent!
-With the 3rd party TC's your exif will not show the correct focal length (Not THAT big of a deal) but your IQ might be a little bit softer.

Someone mentioned the 100-400 and a 1.4 TC. Unless you have a 1 series body; you CANNOT use the canon TC with this lens as the Max Aperture 5.6 + the 1 stop you lose with the TC means you lose Autofocus.
I've tried the tape the pins tricks mentioned in the TC sticky; and for me it doesn't work.
With the 3rd party TC's you can try to use it with the 100-400; and some people have both good and bad results trying to Autofocus.

I LOVE my 1.4 TC with both my 70-200's; it's a really flexible way to carry 1 lens (+ the TC) when you want to go light but get the extra reach if you need it.

That exif issue sounds interesting...
The canon tc seem to be to expensive for me, but in this bussines you know.......pay the most and ull get the most..
So the canon will be me best choice i supose.

PD: chirs i suposse those pics are just quick snapshots. i cant see very good IQ at all. Correct me if im wrong.

I own the 70-200mm and wanted something like the 100-400mm for the extra reach. I toyed around with the idea of getting a 1.4x TC as well.

In the end, I went with a 2x II TC. I didn't have to buy another $1400 lens, the existing 70-200mm f/2.8L IS has a better IS revision and as a bonus maintains the weathersealing which the 100-400mm lacks altogether. The 1.4x TC just didn't offer the range I wanted. 140-280mm isn't that great, IMO.

In my (thus far) limited experience with the combo, it produces fantastic shots and IS at 400mm is very doable! I'm happy with my choice.

You should read the message from Tdragone: " you CANNOT use the canon TC with this lens as the Max Aperture 5.6 + the 1 stop you lose with the TC means you lose Autofocus. " With a 1D you're fine, with any lesser camera you are not!

That's not true. Any lens that's f/2.8 or brighter can be used with the 2x TC and retain AF... From Canon's own site:

"With the EF 2x II, AF is possible with any EOS body if the lens has an f/2.8 or faster maximum aperture, and compatible Image Stabilization lenses maintain the IS feature when used with any current EOS camera."

It worked on my D30 when shooting the moon the other night as a goof, even!

But you also mentioned the 100-400, which is f/4-5.6 ...net result f/8 or slower with the 2X TC. And while your f/2.8L with the 2x TC works fine, not everyone reads that level of detail and they could well be mislead into thinking any 70-200 will be fine with the 2X TC.

True on the 100-400mm. I don't even know if it's on the list of supported lenses (probably not). As for the 70-200mm f/4 lenses, right, you lose some AF ability on non-1Dxx bodies. I was strictly talking about the f/2.8 versions (and perhaps could've been a little more specific).
