do you guys use lens hood on this big boy? i'm debating if whether or not if that's needed. not sure if there's a lot of flaring issues with the f2.8 version.

any suggestions?

Use the hood, if only for the extra protection afforded the front end of the lens. And I've found that it helps with sun-haze caused with the sun is right above you.

ah.. thanks.. i was thinking about using the hood for protection as well.

any problems using the hood at 200mm? like any light falloff around the corners of the photos?

there is no light falloff. canon hoods are designed specificly for the lenses they go on. therefore there is no downside to useing the hood. and no reason not to.

lol. you have no idea :D. its worth it though. get a nice strap like the POTN strap if you dont have one. great for lugging big lenses around with.

yup.. POTN strap is on my list of "to buy". i've got the hand strap on there already just so i can have a better grip when i have that big boy on.

btw.. how come the lens hood (external link)is black? don't they have white ones?

I imagine it's because the lens is white to combat heat distortion (and it really doesn't heat up as much as the black camera), and that's not really needed for the hood. And it creates a nice looking pattern with the black rubber zoom and focus rings.

nope, all they have for the 70-200 is black. only the big primes have white ones. it doesnt look unnatural at all.

For me most of the time the camera is hanging off of a shoulder b/c it's to big to have hanging right in front of you. The hood is the only protection you have for the filter or front element.

My hood bumps into doorways, benches and other obsticles as I'm swapping between bodies.

yeah.. no doubt it's sexy white with black rings.. white is my favorite color, white civic, white fetish cycle i built, white helmet.. you get the idea.

but it'd look really weird with a black hood in front though..
