Always use the hood as they get plenty of bashing. My is scuffed, but not a mark on the main lens itself.

We still seem to be getting confusing views on the damn hood.
The primary purpose of the hood is to keep unwanted light out of the lens !

An auxilliary (byproduct) utility of the hood is in guarding the lens front from certain types of mechanical interferences.

OK, Skippy, your turn now.;)

The hood I have fits it's category of protecting his big brother pretty well, he has the scars to prove it, and the element enjoys seeing his little brother gets beat up. But no matter what, they always get a long. It's a sexy lens, epescially the IS :)

It's really weird-- my hoods are in horrible shape, even after having them for less than a month, they gather severe beatings. Yet, all of my lenses, even the platic ones, are in perfect shape??? I can't figure it out-- does anyone know of a hood gremlin or something?

Always use the lens hood...

Besides, it makes this already beefy lens even more intimidating. For extra fun, strap on a 2x TC and swing that bad boy around a crowd.

:D

haha... that reminded me of an article about a photog that go beat in the mideast or somewhere by his own EOS camera.

but the 2X TC does sound very tempting... my wife is going to hate this site.. haha

LOL... That's very possible. The total combo could bludgeon a horse. :D

I wanted the 1.4x TC but in the end decided that 140-280mm was pretty lame. Went for the 2x TC instead and it rocks. Got two awesome shots using the combo without trying, during the first couple of days of owning it. It's a wonderful match to the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, IMO.
