Technical and artistic perfection. If I had a 500mm I would use it for everything also !!

Thanks for the replies...........

Accentor, must be a nice garden, but your flamingos look a bit pale......;)

Glenn, my flamingos are REAL flamingos; i.e. the European Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus whereas the one you photographed at Slimbridge is a captive bird of the North American race Phoenicopterus ruber. Added to which the birds I have depicted are probably not full adults; it takes five years to achieve full adult plumage and the deepest colour. By the way, colour ringing on the legs of many of these birds show that they were born in the Camargue or Cota Donana.

Colin, sorry........... didn't want to upset anyone, i realise yours are real wild birds, and most flamingos at slimbridge are captive and just as pale, i also realize that this vivid colour is a bit artifical because of the feed.

Flamingos are obviously a passion for you, and thankyou for identifing what type of flamingo my picture was of.

when i go back to slimbridge i'll try to photo the other types of flamingos and post them.

Glenn, no need for apologies here. I thought that your photo was a very dramatic shot. Flamingos are not a particular passion for me, it is just that they roost on the lagoon and fly off over my house every morning to visit their feeding areas. I am, however, an extremely keen birder and enjoy watching and photographing all birds (it was why we moved here). I do think that Slimbridge, and the WWT in general, is a bit of a "circus". Peter Scott, the founder, has much to answer for. Non-native, captive birds are a bloody nuisance because eventually some individuals escape. In the case of Slimbridge their biggest crime was allowing another N American species, the Ruddy Duck, to escape into the wild. It became common in the U.K. and then migrated to S Spain where it began inter-breeding with the indigenous White-headed Duck to which it is closely related. Due to the stronger genes and general "zest for life" this interbreeding is severely threatening the future of the White-headed Duck. A Ruddy Duck culling programme is under way in the U.K. but has (inevitably) created much controversy within the "aghh, poor little birdie" lobby. I am a member of RSPB and SPEA (its Portuguese equivalent) but would never support WWT.
