Envy is setting in and you're the cause.:) I tried all spring and summer to get the "shot" of a wild NY Bald Eagle with no luck. How close were you? Enjoyed both Keith and keep posting more of these if possible. Lets me know it can be done.

both are great shots I guess it's never too early to go to Nest Depot to begin rebuilding the old crib.

These are crops of the originals, I'd say I got about 30 to 40 yards from the tree that the nest is in, I did not want to chance startling them and have them abandon the nest. Last year our local small town newspaper actually did a story on this nest along with the EXACT location, needless to say, they abandoned the nest because of all the people that would gather to see them. The nest is actually across the street from a bank with alot of traffic and also a busy road. I am surprised that the even built the nest there. I'll try and get a wide angle shot of the nest and location, you won't believe the location..it's amazing that they return year after year....

Thanks Zip and all the others that have viewed and commented. :)

It's a little unusual, but when you think about it, why not? They aren't being shot at, nobody can get too close, there must be easy food for them close by, and they may have been hand raised. Peregrines on the brink of extinction have made a comeback when reintorduced into areas where they aren't shot, they can build a nest and there is easy food, like nice plump squab. :D

They seem to be totally able to ignore the rat race going on below them.

Here is a shot of the nest right a the sun is rising.....notice how close it is to the street and entrance to the bank's parking lot. Most bald eagles nest that I have seen are in very high trees and away from noise and people. This location as well as the other one in my area surprises me because it is so close to the street and people, yet they come back every year.

I think we are going to have to adjust our "misconceptions" of what these once rare birds will do when people encroach on their once private domains. I am 60, and just before I was born, DDT came into use. Eagles were so prevalent before DDT that people would just shoot them as pests. I've seen more than one dessicated eagle carcass nailed to a barn wall.

The DDT was their near downfall and now that DDT is very closely monitored, but still used, they are coming back. And coming back in a big way.

Also, since the year I was born, in the US alone, there are now twice the number of people with twice the amount of crowding and trash people create. Given the chance, eagles will live among us and do quite well. It's not like they are incapable, as some birds are, of living in captivity. I mean, they don't wither and die as some animals and birds do if kept in a cage. So again, why not, heh? I think it's a great new thing. :)
