Do a search in this forum. Lots of good reading. I seriously considered one, but opted for the 70-200 f4L on the basis of build quality. It is said to be a very good lens, but don't know if I'd get it from Ritz.

I have it and I love it. I was gonna sell it cause I bought a 70-200 f/2.8. Wow am I glad that I didn't sell it!

It's not the fastest lens out there, but I've got some excellent daytime shots, and the 300mm is great reach. Even at night, just bump the iso up and I've got some clean shots!

I do hate the lens hood, it's pretty cheap, but it does it's job well.

And IS at 300mm... priceless! Just make sure you know that it should be on for about 1/2 second before you snap away. You can always turn IS off if you have good light and good shutter speeds!

Great lens, but that's a lousy price from Ritz... you can do better at B&H. As I noted in the thread referred to above, check the review here (external link).

so now Im torn between the 70-300mm IS USM or the 70-200mm F/4L USM. is it worth scacrificing the L-glas for 100mm more and IS?

70-200L is f/4 at 200mm
70-300 IS is f/5.0 at 200mm

2/3rd of a stop, and no IS. Give me IS any day over that paltry advantage. It'll take close to 2 stops for me to give up IS, and that means 70-200 f/2.8.

70-300 optical quality is magnificent, definitely not to be confused with the 75-300 IS that preceded it.

I would second the 70-300. The IS is just incredible. I've taken some shots at 300mm handheld and low light conditions, and the pictures turned out great. Not having to use the tripod for many shots is a time saver. And the IQ is surprisingly high, so I wouldn't be too concerned with it.

Here are photos taken with the Canon 70-300mm IS USM.

I took all of these with this lens on a 300D so that should give you some idea. I love this lens but I'm trying to sell it for more reach. You will not go wrong with this lens. Wish I could keep it, but if I want to upgrade, I have to part with it.
