Hacking the EF-S 60 Macro: Someone had to do it

And I volunteered.

I love the 60 macro, I'd love to take it with me to the 5D, and so on. Sadly, this is not to be, because of the EF-S mount.

So in a nutshell, I hacked the EF-S 60 macro to remove the baffle. It was nerve wracking. I think I need a drink. I think they even epoxied the baffle down on this one, I can see traces of that stuff. NASTY!!!

Long and short of it, the baffle goes, same way as the 17-85 IS USM done by Lightrules (thanks dude, your work was key in making this happen).

I even put a 5D on the line, thinking heck, in for a dime, in for a dollar. Actually a lot of dollars. No, the 5D mirror did not suffer lasting damage (I THINK). YES, it DID slam into the back of the lens   YES, it was $#@(ing scary.

On the other hand, the 1D loves its new workmate.

Reports for 1.3X crop:

Normal photography distances: Some vignetting at f/4 and light falloff at the edges. Moderate, but not a black circle as some expect.
Easiest way is to crop it out. Frame loosely for this reason.

Macro working distance: Works great. No falloff that I can see. Wonderful stuff. I think the imaging circle increases. Based on the 5D shots I took, it appears the lens can cover full frame at macro WD, but the gigantic black streak across the bottom third of the frame is convincing me that the mirror is slamming into the rear of the lens. Someone please reassure me I'll be all right!

The 5D LOOKS fine.. will be taking it out later today for some work. Hopefully all will be fine.

Way to kill the shutter! You're nuts.

Happy consumerism and all, but:
Full frame needs a large mirror. EF-s lenses designed for the small mirror. If you hack them - the mirror can collide with the element.

I'm surprised the shutter still works.

You have a lot of guts. But I suppose no guts no glory :)

Maybe it would be safer to use it with a 12mm extension tube on your 5D?

I don't see how it can hurt the shutter, but certainly the mirror could get damaged.

Unless the mirror gets jammed which in turn would do damage to the shutter that's trying to fire.....

So, why not just buy the 100mm f2.8 macro? This just seems crazy to me.

Kinda crazy, but I defintely want to see. You were better off selling and trading for the 100 f/2.8 macro. But I trust you'll do fine.

K, turns out that I had a cola, no Jim Beam in it though.

Cojones have been restored to normal operating status too...
