Challenge #40 - Photo Illusion
This contest is going to be a little different from others. I am looking for "doctored" photos or groups of photos. Edd's entry in the last contest inspired me to do this. We have seen very simple photo illusions - like the ones of little Johnny holding up the Tower of Pisa. You can keep it simple if you want, but I would really like to see some illusions that cannot really exist. Ones that would require post processing. I have seen stuff like a big hand coming out of the sky and picking up a person. Cats flying through space.... etc.

Since this is a photo contest, and not a post processing contest, I need to say that the primary AND the majority of photos used must be from you and your small Canon camera. But for these types of pictures, you may need to borrow other shots from the net. Like if you want to create a desert scene, but never been to the desert. You may need to use a shot of a desert, but the primary picture must be your own. If there is any question about where your shots have come from, please include an explanation of how you obtained the shots.

Please remember rules 3 & 6. I hope this contest doesn't cause too much confussion, but send me a PM if you have questions. We want to keep the contests free of clutter until the end.

About to Get Eaten

Title: About to Get Eaten
Camera: Canon S2IS

Postprocessing: This is a combination of two pictures taken at Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois last fall. The lizard (which was about 6 inches long) was cut, resized, and pasted into the main picture. I made sure the shadows were the right angle and that his feet would be touching the rocks as if he were climbing the cliff area. It made for a very realistic look!

heeeeeere birdy birdy birdy!

Both the birdhouse and cat pics were taken by me with an A620. Pretty simple Photoshop techniques of cutting out the cat and resizing. I added a shadow of the cat's legs to make it look a little better.

Toy Train

I know this looks a little cheesy, but I've never really tried things like this w/ my photshop. I took this picture while on a bridge, behind a fence. I found the image of this toy train when I did a google for toy trains.

I liked all these pictures for different reasons. I am glad to see you all got into this and that some of you expanded your techniques by trying to do it. I will make some comments about the shots, and then post the winners

"Reaching In" is cool looking. The idea of a hand coming out of the sky is unique - a bit Monty Pythonish. Although I did not like the opening hole a lot. Maybe if the hand blended in a little better with clouds around it.

"About to get eaten" is really neat. It took me - and some friends - a moment to see what the effect was. I just didn't see the lizard at first. I think you attached it really well and it looks real (if there were lizards that big). Perhaps a bit more contrast between the lizard and the rocks.

"Close Church/Far Church is an original idea that I had not seen before. My problem is that it looks doctored. The birdhouse just doesn't blend in too well. But it is a good perspective shot.

"Here Birdy birdy birdy" is funny. You know a cat would love to perch themself on a birdhouse and look inside if they could. I think you did a good job combing the images. But I wish the birdhouse wasn't so big. It seems to get in the way.

"Toy Train" is another good idea. It blends in well and looks realistic. But the smoke ruins it for me. I would have left it out. I also wish the chain link fence was out of the shot.

"Is he dead yet" is nice because you have created a scene in your mind that could possibly happen, but you would most likely never see. It shows some good creativity. For me, the downfall is the lack of interest in the scene. Also, some of the elements in the shot don't look blended too well - like the birds.

"Looking Down from Above" is a nice concept. But personally I would have prefered a different scene for the baby to be looking down on. Although it may have some personal significance for you - which is great! The photo of the memorial is slanted and the 2 people in the foreground are distracting. The image of the baby looks good up until it is abruptly cut off. But the baby does look like she is looking down on something.

"Playground of the Abyss" is eerie looking. I like how you have darkened the stream and made it real moody. The green objects look otherworldly. But for me, they don't add to the picture. It seems like two different ideas put into one picture. I am having a hard time understanding what you are saying here.

"I Dunno, Wha' Da You Wanna Do?" is cute. And a nice idea. I think you placed the butterfly on the nose real well and it looks like how it may look for real. For me, it lacks creativity. But I think it's done well.

"Attack" I really like this one. From a photographic standpoint, the shots are really clear and well exposed. Plus it shows some real patients and good timing to get these shots. I think the idea is great. My only quibble is that the cat looks a bit fake in the composition. I don't know if I am saying that right - but there is just something about how the cat looks against the background.

"Toy car" is another one of those great creative ideas. I am not sure how it was done, but it seems you have used that technique I have read about where you make a real scene look like a model. In that respect, it looks fantastic. My problem with this is that because it looks like a model, the arm coming down looks completely plausable. Like someone look a picture of your model while you were hold the car. So I guess it just looks too real :). Perhaps if the city scene looked like a real city, and not a model. I pasted in to my processing program and cropped out the arm just to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me.

"A gorilla is seen in Old Whanganui" is a great shot. I love the shot of the city. The gorilla blends in pretty well. But he just doesn't have enough detail for me. Perhaps looking at him from such a distance would not reveal too much detail. So in that way, it is realistic. Maybe if the entire shot was bigger, it would do more for me.

"Saturns glow" I really like. This shot looks like it could have been taken in outer space. The highlight at the top of tree line makes the river look out of the ordinary - and I probably would not like it on it's own. But with the planet, it looks like it is supposed to be there. The lighting of the river and the position of the planet really works well. Personally, I think a slighly smaller image of the planet would have been better.

1st place - O_T "Saturn's Glow"
2nd Place - Snowrdr "Attack"
3rd place - Edd S "About to get eaten"
