L Question

Hi all,

This might be in the stupid question category (didn't someone say there are no stupid questions, just stupid people?!?).

As I'm working up towards saving for an L, with a fixed aperture lens, such as any of the 2.8L zoom offerings, I realize the fixed aperture is throughout the zoom range, but can you use a smaller aperture for a larger DOF, or is it permanently fixed at 2.8 and you're "stuck" with the lens wide open?

Hopefully I've made sense with this question.

Thanks,

Scott

I use a 20D with a Sigma 24-70 or a Sigma 70-200 or a Tamron 18-200 or a Nifty and from time to time a 430EX

The maximum aperture is 2.8. You can close it as you wish down to the minimum aperture which depends on the specific lens.

Best wishes,
Oleg.

doesnt matter if its L or not f2.8 is the max aperture in this case.
lets say you set the camera in TV mode the light will come through the lens at f2.8 giving a nice bright view ,now lets say the the shutter speed is set to 1/500 sec the exsposure needs lets say f11 the lens will stop down by its self to give the corect exsposure , if then it gets dull the lens will stop down to say f4 .
this is just brifly how it works.
Rob.

Yes, you can still make your aperture smaller. 2.8 simply indicates your max (largest aperture) available. You seem to have limited knowledge of how fixed and variable lenses work. You probably don't need an L to attain your stated goal. There are much less expensive alternatives that offer a large fixed aperture setting.

[QUOTE=Trasmc;2100614]Hi all,

This might be in the stupid question category (didn't someone say there are no stupid questions, just stupid people?!?).

I think that was Mr. Garrison on South Park that said that.

There are two kinds of people who are set on buying an L lens just because it's an L lens:

(1) The superficial consumer types who are collecting L lenses, and every new addition to the L fleet is publicly baoadcast with much hooting and yipeeing.
Like.....who's got more L's ? Yeah, very shallow.

(2) Those who habitually shoot in rain , flying mud and sandstorms.

You Missed one:
(3) Those that need that little bit extra in terms of aperture or quality for some specific purpose. (the 85/1.2L being an example of wanting the best portrait lens)
- this category and #2 tend to only get the "L"s they need, not all of them, but the requirements are different (build quality and weather sealing versus image quality as prime factors)

LOL

Being that I've been shooting quite a bit in some really sh!t weather (football games, cadet training, dolphins splashing water, etc...), I guess my 1D body and L glass investment has paid off. ;)
