I am actually tempted to do the same. The weight saving with the additional reach and performance with the TCs is very tempting and I can wait a few more months to save some more.

Oh I'll need more than a few more months but for me I get great results with my 300mm + 1.4x and 2x. The biggest improvement for me would be saving for the 600mm so I will just do that. If I change my mind by the time I save the money I could make a nice down payment on a car! LOL

Lol, that's funny because the only reason I can do it in a few months is because I am selling my second car (mazda miata). Still hard to swollow the idea that a lens will cost me more than a Mazda miata (used but still). Oh well :)

Yes the price is scary. Let's see if by the time I get the money I can bring myself to push that buy button! This lens makes my other gear look cheap!

Oh great someone else to encourage this craziness. So we can blame this lack of fiscal responsibility an each other! :D Just wait until the sample pics hit the forum!

Lol, sounds good to me!! Fund started and as of today, there is $6800 waiting to be spent. The sad news s that I also sold my Wimberely version II head so I will need to save for that as well for the lens coat and new lens foot. Sigh...

Steve,

Thanks very much. It was nice to look back at the Mark II images again. The Mark IV is better in many ways but the the old MK II hold its own.

those are excellent shots, Steve. And from a "lowly" 1DII, a camera you can barely give away on the forum these days. Sheesh. People have no clue.

Same thing with the introduction of the MBP with retina display. You can't give away even a late 2011 MBP fully loaded. Unbelievable.

Thanks very much. I was impressed with the Mark II then and still am. Sure it has it's faults but most do.

It doesn't take long for technology to zap the value out of yesterday's hot items. There are certain stars in manufacturers lineups through the years that seem to pass the test of time. The 500L (f4) and the 1D MK II fall into that category IMO.

agreed 100%. some of my best and favorite shots are from my old 1DmkII and as for the 500 F4, nobody in this thread is going to argue with it, that lens made me smile everytime i used it.

YOU guys are going to get me in trouble with the wife... :p

not sure if this is the right section... but in buying used... does the date code matter much on the 500L?

UX vs UU...
