His 70-200L 2.8 markII is on its way. Well, it is still not a 500L......:)

You can say that again. Can't wait till I get a new 70-200, my old 2.8L IS has seen its days, time to retire.

One from January.

I'd love to have one, but I'd never be able to convince the wife that it had not cost me a kidney. The new 70-200 2.8 MkII looks very similar to my old 70-200 f4, and the F4 was not a bank breaker, so the new one must be the same... right? ;)

I'll just stop by occasionally and gawk at these shots! I think that a rental is as close as I'll get TBH!

At the moment I have a 300/2.8L IS & 800/5.6L IS for wild life photography. Now I find the 300 a bit short even with Extenders so I am thinking of letting it go and upgrade to a 500/4L IS.

Bad move/good move?

Because of the World Cup I am hoping Canon will come out with a refresh model for the 500 in say 70 days? Then again I could be waiting in vein.

Before anyone asks the 500 will be used by another person with a 1.4x Extender and 7D. That's more reach than me on a 1D4.

The 500/7D setup is also being made as a lighter weight deployment setup by say 2kg.

Honestly keep the 300 f2.8 You will regret it if you don't. As for the New 500, rumors have it due around winter of 2010, most likely they will announce it then and release it early next year. I have a buddy up north in San Fran that just got a 500mm and shoots with a 7D and 1.4x TC. The reach factor is very little of a distance, nothing to go crazy over, I have tested my 40D and 1D3 with and without the 1.4x TC and the reach difference was nothing.

I would honestly try to get the 500 on top of what you have if possible. But that 300 f2.8 is like GOLD! I regret selling my 300mm f4L IS.

I too plan to get the 300 2.8 and see from photos that it's a beast. The reach difference is about 210mm in FOV. 1d3+500+1.4=910mm (FOV) - 50D+500+1.4=1120 (FOV). Almost like strapping on a 300 to the end of the 500 and 1.6 body. I'd keep it too unless you need to subsidize the new purchase. Btw SEV do you mean 2011; winter's over.

I toyed with the idea of selling my 300 f4 IS but then realized that I only paid $250 for it so it would not be such a big expense sitting, plus I took it out with me and played with it and thought...nah I'll keep it. It takes some amazing portraits wide open.

Oops my bad I meant towards the end of the year 2010. November, December. Begining of the 2011 winter.

Did you use a monopod and any pics?

Monopod. Tripods are not allowed in.

Here is the link to a photo I posted in the 400mm section of this category:
