i was reading the canon site about how to take care of your lense. they mentioned using the canon fluid to clean the lense, but i'm sure there are other brands out there.

so what do you guys use for cleaning the lense? and do you use the same fluid & procedure to clean in the glass in the back of the lense as well?

Lens Pen. I run a lens rental business and clean a dozen lenses a week. Lens pen is awesome.

Agree with Roger Lens Pen is the best. Brush off any lose dust and then use the pen.
Don't have to mess with any thing and it is inexpensive.

I would suggest using "Formula MC" cleaning fluid. Never leaves a film and works even on stubborn Hoya and Cokin filters. Been using it for over two decades. :p

I haven't used lens solution in years. I simply blow the lens off with air, then gently wipe with a clean microfiber cloth.

I use Residual Oil Remover and lens paper.

But prevention is better than the cure. I'd rather use a lens that has some dust on it than clean it obsessively, which might damage the coatings. Less is more.

That's what the microfiber cloth is supposed to remove. I find that it removes the visible smudge pretty well, but it leaves an invisible film that will collect dust. That's why I switched to ROR.

MF isn't a great idea, IMO. For one thing, you're repeatedly using the same cleaning surface. It might suck up fingerprints, but that oil then gets in the nap of the cloth. Not to mention possibly gritty things. Eeew.

Use solution and a fresh lens tissue every time.

The last time I bought it was at Glazer's in Seattle, where I was traveling at the time. It lasts a LONG time. I haven't seen it locally but I see it at B&H Photo:

I was reading some threads from a different site that was recommending Collodion USP. Has anyone used it and how were the results?

I used Mr. Clean Lemon Scent on my new 300 2.8. It smells great.
