Hello All.

Have to say it's been a few weeks since I took part in this wonderful forum. Been selling a house, dogsitting, seeing concerts and been buying a car, a tv and now a 30D. WOO HOO!!!! :D Yes I am happy.!!!

Bought the 30D with the 24-105 f/4L lense and the feel of the two combined is just heavenly. The balance and weight feels perfect to me. Unfortunately due to getting home late and then charging battery and ..... DRAMATIC MUSIC ....... READING THE MANUAL I have not been able to get any good test shots. Hoping to get out in next couple of days, weather permitting, and indulging in my first DSLR!!!!

Many thanks to all the decend photography peeps on this forum for the info and wisdom given to me to enable me to make this purchase. :D

Anyway, just thought I would let you all know. Will be in touch with some pics (will try for the obligatory ducks/geese/swans) very soon.:D

Thank you everyone.

I am really looking forward to getting out and taking lots of pics. Need to wait for the rain to stop and then think where to find ducks!!!

sageone I only just managed to afford this setup so might be a while before I think about getting a second!!! Nice idea though :D

jcpoulin By all means say great minds, I know mine is and seeing as you have same gear then you must have as well. So you find the lens ideal for portaiture and candid pics? That's kind of why I decided on this lens in order to expand my creativity with people.

Well it's good to see that people seem to think highly of the combination. I came to the conclusion after many long hours trawling this forum for info. Think it will suit my immediate needs and I now have some time to practice before taking pictures at a Xmas Ball at the beginning of December.

Great name Dave!!! Spread the word that all Dave's are great

Been doing it for years. your the first person to agree with me;)

I got my 24-105L while i still had my 350D but it seems to be a better match for the 30D.
I couldnt believe i spent more on the lens than the camera but i have gone through a few other, good lens's and each time in the back of my mind i kept thinking i really want the Canon but its too expensive. so i kept getting rid of perectly good lens's.
once the new Amex card arrived that was it, happy at last (for now).
Canon 85 f/1.8 next for the christmas season and thats it (for now)
Oh god, this is never going to stop.

Why have you decided to go for the 85 and not the 50? Is it general build quality or do you feel that the 85 gives a better length to work with on the 30D?

Thanks Andrea. Apologies for the jealousy moment

Was wondering why you mentioned the 15th but if I remember there's a Canon rebate scheme starting in America and Canada isn't there? What you planning on getting?

Im going for the 85 becuase it costs more than the 50mm:lol::lol::lol:

No, i have had the 50mm f/1.8II and loved it but indoors its too long for me so i got the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. i had issues with that lens outdoors so got rid of it and got a Canon 35mm f/2.0. its a great lens, nice focal length for me (yes, i have a crop camera) indoors and i take it out sometimes and on my 350D i could put the camera in my jacket pocket.
I sold the 50mm as i wasnt using it much but now i have a camera that can make better use of it i was thinking of getting the 50mm f/1.4 or another Sigma 30mm f/1.4 but again, i have the 24-105L on most of the time and also a fairly new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 so i have the focal lengths covered.
so im thinking i want a fast lens, f/1.4 would be good but indoors i always use bounced flash so i dont need a fast lens for that but most of my shots are more head and torso rather than full length and the 85 seems to get really good reviews and it seems ideal as a portrait lens so i though why not? Its also a lens that i could walk around with outside as a lot of my shots are over 50mm but under 106mm. plus it would then become my fastest lens
The one thing i would find hard to spend money on is something i have already owned and sold.
Im also thinking of my kids christmas plays comming up. one has a medium sized hall i know the 85 would be ideal for that.
This all might seem like fuzzy logic but i know what i mean

Dave - yes, here in the US the rebates begin on the 15th. I'm also getting the 30D and the 24-105L. Very excited, and a whole lot of impatient!
