Does this work? I've done this effect with a conch shell and a flower (in the nature forum) - and had time on my hands today, so played around with this shot.

C&C please.

I like it, and I think it's the kind of thing that would sell.

Very nice, Elizabeth. When I intitally looked at the photo, I asked myself, "What's going on here?" I really like this effect. It works well.

Well thanks all, I appreciate the comments. On close inspection I noticed the little error on the mast, so will have to do it over:rolleyes:, but am grateful for the opinions and support!

But I think only YOU see that error. Unless you pointed it out, I don't think most people would notice. It looks like you used a flash on the rocks...the sun must have been casting the perfect light for you. Nice work! :-)

Very cool Elisabeth. Do you have a link to a "how to" for this effect? You have me wanting to give this a try. I love the picture that you started with too. That poor old boat has seen betterr days but still shows off her colors nicely.

Thanks JT, no flash used, I was on a boat and using my beloved cheap 75-300mm USM. Actually I looked at the original untouched photo of the boat and the kink in the mast is there too, so I guess it wasn't an error after all. Thank goodness, I wasn't relishing the idea of doing this over, it took a couple of hours to get it right!

Dedsen, I will try to remember how to do it (I've done 3 images like this in the last couple of days, never right down the steps, and consequently I think I've been doing it a different way each time!) and let you know asap.

It's pretty simple (yet time consuming), isn't it? Create a couple of layers of the image, and then a layer mask for one and just start erasing? Seems simple enough...I just haven't had the patience to try it yet.

This is how I did it - I haven't a clue what a mask is, I taught myself PS by trial and error :D If there is a better way of doing it I'd love to know!!

Choose an image with elements that you want outside the “frame” – something that is close to the edge of the image. I size mine to 5x7 at 300dpi TIFF. Make a copy of the original and work on that.

First, in the View menu, place guides (I use vertical 0.75 and 6.25, horizontal 0.74, 4.25).
The use rectangular marquee tool to select the area between the guides, then go to Select menu and choose Inverse. Go to Layer menu, choose New Fill Layer > solid colour, white. This will make your border. Flatten image and save with a new name, but do not clear the guides. Close image.

Open it back up, reselect the area between the guides and inverse again. Open the original image, Select All, Edit>Copy, and then paste it into the one you are working on. This will make a Layer 1 in the Layers window. Select Layer 1, and using the history brush, brush between the selection guides to make the border, taking care not to go over elements that you want to keep in the border. Use a hard edged history brush to carefully go around those elements. When you are satisfied, flatten the image and save it, and close, keeping the blue guides in place.

Re-open the image, use the guides to reselect the image within the border, then Edit>Stroke (at 4 pixels, black, normal). Then clear marquee and guides, and use the hard edge history brush to remove the black frame from the elements that are to be outside it. Save and Voila!

I hope this makes sense, feel free to contact me if you have any problems. It took me about 45 minutes to do this one, and I did since my last post on this thread, so I guess it didn't take too long:
