Took these pics tonight with my new Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens, the rink is poorly lit so I am happy with the results! Also, I'm an arm-chair amateur photographer so I need to keep changing things up to see what's best (instead of already knowing :) )

Any feedback is welcome...

pics look pretty good for conditions, is it possible to get into the penalty box next time? or somewhere above the glass?

There's no problem getting behind the bench or penalty box, but I'll have to wait until I'm taking pics of someone I know on the team before I do that. Shooting from the stands definately has it's limitations. Here's a couple of shots I took at the Tampa Bay Lightning practice with the lens :

I'm new to hockey too. I have the same lens. What camera setting did you use?

70-200mm Canon F/2.8 IS set at M 2.8, 30D, ISO 1600, 1/400 - 1/600, Focus IO Servo set to center focal point, 5 fps, I used the white balance meter to tell me what speed would balance the pics out the best. I probably could have set the ISO lower and worked with the shutter speed on teh closer shots where the players are shooting to get rid of the grainy look, will do next time to see how it turns out.....

Here's a couple more pics

i normally bring a step ladder to get above the glass ;)

i normally use noiseware when im done with the cropping and everything in photoshop to get rid of the noise, works great to without a loss of detail
