There always seems to be new threads popping up requesting information and/or advice regarding what equipment to purchase/use in wedding situations. I thought I would share what my setup is, as I have spent a considerable amount of time researching what best suits my needs and have arrived at a balance that I am comfortable with for the time being.
This might help any new or prospective wedding shooters decide what they do/don't need. I would also encourage any other experienced shooters to share their setup, so we can all compare and share what works for us.
My Kit
Cameras
Canon EOS 30D X 2
The 30D's are my body of choice, as they presented as a fantastic value for money option. There are plenty of reviews online so I won't get into any technical reviews.
I have 2 bodies for 2 reasons. Firstly it enables me to have two lenses available to shoot at any point in time without changing and secondly it's imperative that I have a backup body should one malfunction during the course of the day.
Lenses
EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
This gives me width to burn for the ocassions where I might need it. Generally used for setting shots where I might take a landscape the set the theme for the wedding location. Also useful for some artistic interior shots.
EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
The All-Purpose lens. This stays on one of my camera bodies all day. It's got a bit of width for group formals and a bit of length where needed. 2.8 right across is nice, and the IS can get you out of some tight spots if you find yourself in them.
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
The low light performer. If I need shallow DOF and creamy bokeh for artistic purposes, or simply need to get some shots away in low available light, this lens gets a go. The first dance at the reception is a typical scenario where I don't want to spoil the moment with a flash, but need still need enough speed to make the capture.
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
This gem of a lens enables me to assume the role of a sniper during the ceremony and beyond. I can skirt around capturing the action in an inconspicuous manner. It's got enough length for any situation I've encountered in a wedding scenario to date.
Accessories
Canon 580EX Speedlite X 2
One on each body for situations where it's needed/wanted. Having two available means I have a backup should one fail throughout the course of the wedding. I also carry a couple of Omnibounce diffusers.
Sekonic L-358 Flashmeter
Metering in the camera isn't always as reliable as I need, so this little gadget gets the job done. It has a host of functions available which help in a number of different and varying situations.
Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash
I carry 10GB worth of cards. I have 4 x 2GB and 2 x 1GB. I shoot RAW, so that's enough for approx 1000+ captures. I wouldn't like to be shooting much more than that.
Canon BG-E2 Battery Grip X 2
Both my bodies have a battery grip. The dual advatagges of extra battery life plus the ability to shoot in portrait mode comfortably make the grips a welcome addition to the armory.
I carry other bits and pieces such as batteries, cables, cords, tripod etc but the items listed above are the core basics of my kit. I'm happy to answer any questions regarding what I've listed and would love to see what everyone else is using.
