There always seems to be new threads popping up requesting information and/or advice regarding what equipment to purchase/use in wedding situations. I thought I would share what my setup is, as I have spent a considerable amount of time researching what best suits my needs and have arrived at a balance that I am comfortable with for the time being.

This might help any new or prospective wedding shooters decide what they do/don't need. I would also encourage any other experienced shooters to share their setup, so we can all compare and share what works for us.

My Kit

IMAGE: http://www.zeke.com.au/stuff/wedding_kit.jpg

Cameras

Canon EOS 30D X 2

The 30D's are my body of choice, as they presented as a fantastic value for money option. There are plenty of reviews online so I won't get into any technical reviews.

I have 2 bodies for 2 reasons. Firstly it enables me to have two lenses available to shoot at any point in time without changing and secondly it's imperative that I have a backup body should one malfunction during the course of the day.

Lenses

EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
This gives me width to burn for the ocassions where I might need it. Generally used for setting shots where I might take a landscape the set the theme for the wedding location. Also useful for some artistic interior shots.

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM
The All-Purpose lens. This stays on one of my camera bodies all day. It's got a bit of width for group formals and a bit of length where needed. 2.8 right across is nice, and the IS can get you out of some tight spots if you find yourself in them.

EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
The low light performer. If I need shallow DOF and creamy bokeh for artistic purposes, or simply need to get some shots away in low available light, this lens gets a go. The first dance at the reception is a typical scenario where I don't want to spoil the moment with a flash, but need still need enough speed to make the capture.

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
This gem of a lens enables me to assume the role of a sniper during the ceremony and beyond. I can skirt around capturing the action in an inconspicuous manner. It's got enough length for any situation I've encountered in a wedding scenario to date.

Accessories

Canon 580EX Speedlite X 2

One on each body for situations where it's needed/wanted. Having two available means I have a backup should one fail throughout the course of the wedding. I also carry a couple of Omnibounce diffusers.

Sekonic L-358 Flashmeter
Metering in the camera isn't always as reliable as I need, so this little gadget gets the job done. It has a host of functions available which help in a number of different and varying situations.

Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash
I carry 10GB worth of cards. I have 4 x 2GB and 2 x 1GB. I shoot RAW, so that's enough for approx 1000+ captures. I wouldn't like to be shooting much more than that.

Canon BG-E2 Battery Grip X 2
Both my bodies have a battery grip. The dual advatagges of extra battery life plus the ability to shoot in portrait mode comfortably make the grips a welcome addition to the armory.

I carry other bits and pieces such as batteries, cables, cords, tripod etc but the items listed above are the core basics of my kit. I'm happy to answer any questions regarding what I've listed and would love to see what everyone else is using.

I use basically the same kit as Mizuno - 2x20D instead of 2x30D, plus I add the 100mm macro (ring/flower shots), and I have a 12-24 instead of a 10-22.

Once I get my arse into gear and complete the wedding FAQ i'm working on it'll have more details of what I use and why.

Sorry to drag the thread in another direction for a second, but Mizuno, I notice you have an older imac in the background of the image. Are you a mac-based photographer?

Atta boy. Would you mind sharing your workflow? Which applications do you use for organizing/importing? What mac are you running?

Here's what I use:

Bodies:

5D as main and 30D as backup.

Lenses:

Primary lens on 5D - 24-105L IS

Primary lens on 30D - either 35/1.4 or 85/1.2 depending on the location

I'll also call on a 50/1.4, 70-200/4L and 135/2 depending on lighting, location and the requirements of the couple in question. I have the 17-40 for wider shots on the 30D in case the 5D fails me. Plus 580EX's.

I cant justify myself as a fully fledged wedding pro photog as of yet but i am shooting a fair bit as of late... my only equipment is

20D, and when I can borrowed 350D from cousin

Shoot predominantly with my 24-70 L with 580EX on my 20D, and when I get the 350D, i have my 85 f1.8 on and now and then i will switch to my sigma 70-300.

Again because im not a pro i cant justify spending cash on equip as of yet, the clients never pay me :P so i just shoot for my portfolio and give them pics.

How do you like the 24-105 for wedding photography? Do you find that other than outdoors, you wish you could step up the f/stop below f4 or do you find that it's good enough for let's say 70% of the situation?

I'm debating picking this lens up in the next month or two for this reason.

24-105 is fine for, say, 85% of an average wedding (until I get a chance to play with my new 70-200 ;-)a) ... if you're shooting with the 580EX AF-assist beam it's fine indoors. I'm planning to get a 50/1.4 for flashless shooting ...

It's not something I've had a problem with. I came to Canon from D2x/D200 Nikons and my primary wedding lens there was the 17-55/2.8 Nikkor (and a 35mm equivalent of 25.5-82mm). A fine lens but not long enough some of the time. With the Nikkors I generally wanted to keep at ISO400 or below, whereas I'll happily shoot the Canons at 800 or 1600 if need be. That gives me the stop I've lost, and the additional DOF the 5D gives me covers some of the 2.8 > 4 step. The range from 82mm equivalent to a genuine 105mm is a godsend and the IS worth the change alone. Put it another way, f2.8 isn't really fast enough for a fair amount of available light wedding work (here in the UK at least), so I'd always have swapped to my old 85/1.4 Nikkor anyway. The same is true with the Canons and for real low-light stuff I'll be below f2.8.

Combined with the 35/1.4, 85/1.2 and 135/2 I don't find I have any prroblems at all.
