It was a dark day, but I managed this shot with ISO 800..

Jim is quick on the trigger isn't he? I know this guy didn't stay where you shot him more than a second or so. Great capture.

Mind telling me how far away you were when you took this photo?

I'm about to order the 100-400mm lens next week...and the suspense is killing me...

Don't think the 100-400L will perform miracles. You still have to get fairly close for a shot like that. Maybe 25-30 feet at most. Maybe less.

I said 25-30 feet at most, cause that shot above is a crop and the picture of the bird is at least 4 times bigger than the bird itself. I was just guessing and going by what I see through mine.

It's still the only lens I'll be ready to spend on this season...otherwise I'd be saving for a while for a 2.8...

The EXIF for that image says, "Lens Focal Length, 260mm". I'm still guessing, but that could be about 20 feet, asuming the image above is a crop. It looks like it. Wrong shape for a raw camera image.

Either way, it's a beautiful picture of a very fun little bird. If you feed them regularly, they'll come right into your hand.
