In Petkal's case, these stats are just from the lenses that he has owned. About 569 of them.

You forgot a zero.

From what I have gleaned over the last 11 months I have been hanging around on POTN, about 9.5% of people who have a problem with the lens actually have a defective lens. the other 90% are doing something wrong, or are suffering from buyer's remorse ( this is a terrible condition, often spouse-induced - " you spent how much??!! " that totally ruins one's pleasure in new toys) and thus looking for an excuse to return an impulsive purchase.

And 0.5% of posts about defective lenses are placed by Noinkers trying to sow dissension in our ranks.

Not even one fifth of that, laddie. However, the sad truth is that there are some retailers out there who do not want to do business with me any more because of the allegedly high number of my returns. Henry's camera is one of them.:(

Cosworth, I am happy if you are......enjoy that superb wallnut bread and easy on their cheap wine...it can be deadly after the 2nd bottle. Are they still baking those superb crusty breadsticks in the morning ?
Does the contract allow you to post any photos here ? Like the crazy signs, foam party, the GM show ("Where is Tarzan ?").
If that big lug Jeremy is still there tell him that the Mad Canuck can still smoke his arse on inline skates if we ever get to meet again. ;)

Jeez, yeah Jeremy is still here. Just got his hair cut Marine style.

I share lots of pics on my website. Foam party pics are hidden around here somewhere...

The contract is damn loose. I retain copyright on all photos. This place could burn down and I'd be able to sell pics from my stash no problem.

When were you here? They are still unbeaten in the last 11 months at hockey....

I was there last almost a year ago....just shortly after they closed my very favourite Cancun.
The CM Cancun was almost like my 2nd winter home. Playa Blanca was that before the 9-11.
The world has changed. So have I.....can't skate as well any more ....neither can I cliff dive... will check your web site now.
Must be lottsa work for ya but some good returns, eh ?
How long do you plan on staying ?

I gotta get this place up to my standards since it was let go for too long. REplacing some old hardware etc. But I plan on making it here for 2-3 years or until my bank account whispers in my ear at night to go back to Hockey and High Def TV.

Out of 14 EF lenses purchased (I've sold two of the 14 that were perfectly fine) I have had to send only one back to Canon's NJ service center for auto-focus calibration. Not a bad record I guess. The irony is that it was the most expensive lens of the bunch, the 300/2.8L IS. The lens came back working wonderfully. So in the end I've been happy with every lens.

About 60% of all new lenses get returned.
About 30% of all soft/missfocused/dusty copies get sold thru eBay and such.
About 79% of all Canon refurb lenses are soft.
About 98% of all used lenses offered for sale are substandard, that's why they are being sold.
The very sad bottom line is: the Canon Corporation, Canon retailers as well as Canon customers are the major concentrators of substandard lens copies.

Numbers like this with no source or anything to back it up mean nothing to me. Where do you come up with these figures?

It's really not a big deal to not get a 100% perfect performing lense....returning it for a different copy or getting maintinence isn't that big of a deal and usually doesn't cost anything. Canon makes some of the best lenses in the world, and that's what matters, if their return rate WAS high...it would be much more noticable.
