They're here this time - juvenile Aussie White Back Maggie

Well I'll just attach them as usual this time. Anyway, got this juvenile when I got home from the other arvo. Sat in the paddock next to the driveway. Had to keep one eye through the lens and the other on it's parents as they have a tendency to swoop - and always from behind!

Aren't your Magpies easily tamed? If they are like the ones here, it would be easier to make friends with mom and pop first, then they should let you get close to junior.

Hi Canonloader. The adults when nesting won't let you within 50 metres of the nest without bombarding you. Extremely protective. It it not uncommon for the police to be called out, particularly in cities, to shoot them as they do actually hit people, and hard. I recall as a child I was knocked off my bike by one and had a rather nasty lump and bloodied contusion left on my head. I was fortunate to be between my car and the fence lying down this time.

Hmmm, maybe I could get the helmet concession?

I just love to see the Australian magpies Trace, they are so big compared to those seen in the UK, nice captures, well done.

Thanks Tony. I do recall seeing a European (I think) Magpie posted recently and I was impressed with the beauty of it compared to ours down here, particularly the long tail.

Canonloader, they do make good pets when you get one young enough and you can also teach them to talk. The Adelaide Zoo had one for a number of years that would talk to you as you walked past, and an aquaintance of mine had one that talked too. On top of that, they are very melodious in the mornings.

They have them here, in the Western states. Even in the wild they come to investigate any human activity in camp. They'll come right down and perch on anything handy within an hour of your arrival, and beg or look for something to steal.

i have some magpies nesting near me, not sure where yet. The adults love to come and get insects when i am working in my garden, and come quite close. I think they have accepted me, as i have never been attacked near my home. I love seeing the babies too, but havn't been in my yard for a while, and havn't seen any bubs yet. Must be about time to turn the soil again!
