I have a friend who is starting out as a makeup artist and wants to make a website with photos of models and makeup she can do.

She has asked me if I can shoot the pics and she understands I am not a professional but wants me to attempt shots like the attached.

What kind of lens would be suitable for shots like this? Also would it be possible to do shots like this without studio lighting?? Could you possibly shoot in a room well lit with a nice white drape in the background??

Any help would be great..

Use your 50mm and shoot around f/4. I suggest shoooting in a well-lit room with a white sheet behind the subject. ALso, use a 300watt lightbulb aimed at the subject or bounced off of the ceiling slightly in front for cheap lighting.

The 50/1.8 gets really sharp starting around f/4, so I'm definatly seconding it for shooting these-- clearly, getting the makeup super sharp is the goal of a photo for a MUA portfolio.

sure, anything from 50mm to telephoto is good. you basically want to minimize barrel distortion of facial features

You can't beat natural lighting for portrait shots. Light from the side at a high angle is best in my experience. I photograph my grandkids all the time and one of my favorite sites is in the "Florida Room" at a McDonalds. On a clear day the light is fantastic :)

Be sure and use your lens hood and position yourself to guard against glare.

Studio lighting is practically a "must" for this type of shot. If you have strong natural light it could be fine, but you'll need reflectors to evenly light your subject and avoid harsh shadows. The reflectors aren't expensive but you'll need an assitant or a stand to hold them. You can even make your own using stiff cardboard and aluminum foil or even just a white surface.
