As many which lens question as i have read, I cant believe I am asking this. Giving my line up on lenses I have, and I shoot portrait and starting weddings, I have been thinking 50 1.4, sigma 30 1.4, 35 1.4L, 24 -105 so if you had my lenses which lens would you get next? Dosn't have to be one i listed.

just wanted to get other opinions what people would add to the arsenal.

Thanks

Ben

Because you do mostly portraits/weddings I would choose the 35 f/1.4, 24-70 f/2.8 and 85 f/1.8 (or f/1.2 if funds allow) and sell your 17-40 & 28-75 lenses to help fund the new ones. That would give you lots of nice options between 10-200mm.

in my opinion....all of those lenses (except for the 24-105) are too short for a lot of portraiture. If you are looking at just wedding use, then maybe they would be ok considering your need for something relatively wide to let you work in tighter spaces....the 35L is amazing from everything I've seen/heard. Ideally you want a longer focal lenght than that to prevent distortion/exaggeration of features that you do not want (i.e. bigger nose, weirdly positioned eyes...etc).

The 24-105 is too slow of a lens (f/4) to produce nice soft bokeh (background blur) that you want/need for portraiture and wedding photography to separate your subject from the background to help it pop and to give it that nice portrait look. 24-70 is a 2.8 lens, so that'll help a lot more than the IS can on the 24-105....image stabilization only helps with camera shake...can't stop subject-motion. the 24-70 would give you nicer bokeh and be a bit faster indoors.

If i were you, and you are planning on shooting a lot of weddings, maybe look at the 85 f/1.8 or 1.2 (depending on your budget...they differ DRASTICALLY in price but are both very nice) and the 16-35 f/2.8L. That way you can have a great portrait lens for headshots/closeups as well as a nice and fast wider lens for times when you need to get closer/wider.

best of luck to ya!

thanks for the replies, I know that 35L is calling me. Do you thinkd the 24-70 would totally be worth all the money over my tammy. I happen to have a sharp copy and didnt know if it would be worth it. I havent done much research on the 16-35 I also play with landscape so the wider ones are for that.

Get a 17-55 IS and a 70-200 IS with the 50mm for bridal portraits. Those should suffice for weddings.

Ben, an absolute MUST for weddings is to get a second body. You should also have extra lenses that you can fall back on if one fails.

Don't even think of doing weddings for money without the backup equipment.

I would have no qualms about using the Tammy. In fact, you seem to be pretty well covered. The 24mm f/1.8 Sigma or 30mm f/1.4 Sigma might be useful for a fast, wider lens which you could keep on the second body for low-light grab shots. And the 135mm f/2L would be marvelous for a fast telephoto.

Gotta love the results from the Sigma 30mm 1.4. :) I think I would like the Canon 85mm 1.8 better though. I think it would fit my style of shooting better.

i think you'll get more keepers with the 24-70L but you'll have to decide if that's true and if it's worth it.

Seems to me like you allready have an alternative to most of these lenses. Why not spend the money elsewhere? (body, tripod, light, whatever)
