Fantastic shot, Trevor. Have never tried such technique, but now have to consider it.

Amazing Shot. I think you may have inspired all of us with your 16 min exposure. I love the colors. Great work, post more as you take them, I would love to see them.

Trevor, thanks for the explanation. Bad assumption on my part. Just a killer shot!

Neat shot Trevor :)

16 minutes eh ?, I'd have forgotten where I set up the camera

I'd have forgotten where I put myself :)

I like where you are going with these kind of images, and have enjoyed reading through your explanations and responses to queries, some food for thought.

Thanks Neil :D . I went out again last night to the same spot. The tide was higher and I got wet feet! All your fault

Sorry, Trevor I must have missed this when you posted.

It's a fantastic shot and I agree with all that has been said about it. The colours, foreground interest everything about it is appealing. The only thing which I can see which I'd possibly clone out is the little light speck to the right of the lighthouse. Other than that it's a fantastic image and a credit to your patience and skill.

At 16 mins you could have had the dogs with you - even if they ran in front of the camera they wouldn't have shown up on the image!

Thanks David, as you know, I value your opinion very much :D
As for letting the dogs run free, there are 3 reasons not to; firstly, one of them would probably pee up the tripod, secondly, they would knock the tripod over, and finally, we'd never find them again.

I love the shot and your explanation of how you figured the exposure time for the shot. That's great information. Did the exposure and colors in the test shot look like the final product (only grainy and and not as sharp) or were you just looking for a balanced histogram?

Thanks for the comments. :D

I was primarily looking for the exposure. From the very limited experience I have had, the colour seems to change with the length of the exposure. So, I'm just trying to find a suitable exposure to ensure that the shot isn't too dark. Obviously, the sky will look very different in a 16 minute shot compared with a 30 second one. I tried a 25 minute shot the other night and have come to the conclusion that shots can be too long when trying to get the cloud movement. The sky lacked any real detail, but I'll try it again, just in case. I think I really need 2 or 3 cameras so I can try different times without having to wait for hours

Its been great fun so far, despite a number of failures! I enjoy the tranquility of night time photography and have spent more time looking at the stars in the last week than at any other time in my life! I'm ver lucky to live in an area surrounded by deer and its rutting time at the moment. The sound of the Red Deer stags bellowing out their challenge when its pitch black is quite eerie. Hair raising too, when they sound very close and you can see their eyeshine with a very small torch

Thanks again to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply. Its much appreciated.

And Cameron, I would like to second that, you can really start to go off people when they get this descriptive! ;)
