I did a search and not sure if I have a solid answer. So, here it goes.

I am looking for a good zoom lens for Hawaii. I'd also like to use it for landscapes and such. Nothing professional, but I'd like a lens that I am going to get plenty of use from and grow with. I have a Rebel XT. Which one of these would you recommend? I have used the f/4L and loved it and it's a good price, but am I setting my standards too low? Is there a better lens to look at during the rebates?

70-200 f/4L USM $35/$70
70-200 f/2.8L USM $45/$90
70-200 f/2.8L IS USM $50/$100

Thanks!!!!!

Stacie

Ditto... Sigma is the way to go, unless you have a thing for brand name and deep pockets...

Depends on how much you want to spend. Sounds like you're happy with the f/4 version - so decide between IS and non-IS. If you want a lens you'll have for the rest of your life... Pick up the f/2.8.

The Sigma is a great choice over the Canon if IS isn't important to you.

Really? But I read that the Sigma doesn't focus as fast and isn't as sharp.

I think there are plenty who would disagree here, the Sigma 70-200 APO DG EX HSM F2.8 is an EXCELLENT lens, especially for the price, when i get the 400L 5.6 im aiming for, ill sell my 70-200 F4L for the sigma

It focuses pretty fast and is sharp enough to give the Canon version a run for the money. When it comes to bang per buck... Sigma is the way to go. Find a local dealer and try them side by side. What are you paying for in the Canon... Brand name, weather sealing, and white paint with red stripe. LOL! Granted... If I had deep pockets I would own Canon

A lot of the Sigma's are great. Does it focus as fast? Well, word on the street is that Sigma's HSM is not as fast as Canon's USM. But do you need it? A lot of posts show the Sigma equally as sharp. However, Sigma's tend to be sharper than their Canon counterparts at wide focal length and vice versa on the other end of the zoom.
Or so I've read.

I called my local dealer and they don't carry the Sigma and he wasn't familiar with the specs. However, he did say that image stabilization is a very nifty feature to have...

oh, if your local dealer doesnt carry sigma, find a new local dealer

The Sigma is a good, lower-cost alternative. The Canon is a better lens overall though.

It's darn near impossible to beat the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS zoom. Granted, it's quite pricey (and heavy)... But it'll be a lifetime friend. I wouldn't give up the IS on mine for anything - or the lens in general for that matter. They'll be burying me with it.

I am getting into photographing weddings...

If it is for pro work then I would suggest the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS.

You may find the f4 zooms rather slow for events, and IS will definitely help to get some shots.

Sounds like the dealer is trying to get more money out of you... There is a big difference between $890 and $1700 IMHO... You may want to look at B & H... They carry both and are good to do business with

From what I've read, the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L is a great lens that makes people go WOW. Even more so the f/2.8 with or without IS. I'm looking at the f/4 myself, just don't know when I'll bite the bullet :)

I'm sure the Sigma is good as well.
