Snowing, gray, windy and cold. What more could you want? But the birds were out in force. Hope you like.

Nice series with the first shot being my favourite. I wish these Red Bellies came just a little bit more north as we are just out of their range. They are a rare sight here and i have yet to see one.

Thanks Gary, appreciate the kind words.

Really? I just fell in love with #2. Kind of like when a babe catches you staring. Oooops. :D

Actually, the Red Bellied is a fairly large bird. He has hefty legs when you see them. I'm surprised they wouldn't go further north. Must be food they eat not being available.

Do you think the lack of super sharpness is due to being handheld, or the lens? It could be better IMO.

If they like peanuts they would like my yard :D

Have you tried using a monopod or tripod? A monopod increased my keeper ratio dramatically and sharpened my images.

They definately go for cracked corn and sunflower seeds. The nuthatches get it from a feeder and hide it in the bark of downed trees, then he comes along and eats it all up. LOL

Nice series Mitch; I like your Red-Bellied (1 Have not seen yet); Your are Hairies on the other hand are actually Downies...Check the nasal tufts at the base of the beak; the spotting under the tail on the white area, relative short beak; and; if the piece of wood is approxamately 2" X 4" then this girl looks to be about 5-6"...making it a downy.

still double checking your unknown...but appears to be a female purple finch

Thanks Ted. I have "All the birds of North America" and I thought it was a Downy at first, then looked in the book and it looked more like their hairy to me. I'm still a newbie at this. But that is a 2x6, not 2x4. Still, not a large bird.

The finch I really liked. She was shy and would not come down for food. Just sat there watching. There were too many nuthatches, chickadees and bigger birds for her. :)

A fine photo ode to winter birds of Wisconsin.
All images include just the right amount of habitat so as to make the birds come alive. Good exposure everywhere.
My favourites are the downies.
