Hart- Welcome to the forums!... There is a lot of awesome people here, I learn a lot from them on a daily basis.
Brutally honest? Well, first of all, it is very nice work.
I did visit your website, and it is clean and to the point, a true portfolio.
The artsy view definitely shows on the photos. Not that I am an expert at it, but by looking at them, each photo is unique, has an identifying feature, and the subject is well displayed.
I am wondering why you chose the #1 of the Derby girl. I liked the others from your site as well, this portrait is good but the light -if you get picky- is almost white-burned. I have not done a lot of studio shoots, but Flash I am comfortable with, and perhaps a different approach (diffuser, bouncing, etc) would have yielded better results. (I do like the shine in the hair a lot).
Senior Portrait #2, is really good. I really like it, I cannot think of any suggestions or anything I would have done to improve it. I like it, and I may have to try your approach for a portrait like this one in the future.
#3 is also good to me. I like this one best of the series, mainly because of the contrast. Nice composition. Lighting is much better, looks like flash was more of a filler rather than an illuminating device.
#4 is a money shot. I love these sort of pictures. The little girl framed inside the mom, and she is reading the writing on the floor. Colors are also captivating. As with shot #2, I could not improve or critique this shot. Plain thumbs up.
#5 I like, the lighting is really good -looks natural to me- and the capture of a perfect moment is priceless. This dude knows he is going to get some. (I apologize for the crude analogy in attempting to describe his expression).
#6 is one of my favorites. You got seven people in three planes (1 in front, 2 middle, 3 back), and whoever they are -a music band I reckon- the image has personality. Someone could probably chime in as to how to better light up the corridor to the farthest member (row 4?...mmmmh) Bean hat, without compromising anyone else's exposure. The front subject on the right is a bit whiteburned, but don't count it as a full critique as I could not tell you how to improve the shot.
#7 Very interesting portrait. This would be an awesome type of self-portrait. I like the lighting, and the shadow cast by the hat. Plane jane true to form portrait.
#8 is ok, specially for early AM. For a brutally honest comment, being out of level, I would have expected to get a better view of the subject in the background, to the right. My guess is that he just did not work out into the frame. I usually make 100s of photos of such type, where if things had worked out my way -if I had gained control of the universe for 1 second- the composition would have been perfect, but because of the elements involved, they don't just always walk right into my frame. Specially on live bands, I have had enough hard times getting the mikes out of the way of the subjects, and on top of that, they keep twirling about, not realizing it is just harder for me to take a picture
... Oh well, Roy Orbison is now deceased, but I bet you anything he was pretty easy to photograph.
Anyhow, in conclusion, to me your work is definitely good, I liked all the photos, favored #5 and 6, and the site you have is nice and to the point. I hope you do find the many mentors I have found on this forum. It's like having an open line with thousands of photographers 24/7, to ask, comment, share, and suggest.
Cheers,
