I recently turned my welcome page into a Photo of the Week page, in the hope that people might visit on a regular (weekly!) basis, at least to see what I've been up to photo-wise.
I also thought it might be good to have just one image (albeit high resolution) to whet visitor's appetites for more, without overloading them with lots of thumbnails and download time. Then if people are interested, they can link to all the photo sub-galleries.
This raises the issue of photographic websites--design considerations and hit strategies. How do you get people to visit more than once? Pekka has one solution: keep making such great images that we're always wondering if there's another super photo up on his gallery! Others just keep posting to newsgroups to check out the new photos on the site. I don't know which strategy works best, or if there's no clear "better" model. Each to his/her own, I suppose.

cheers,

PS Photo of the Week is at welcome.htm link on signature now.

Interesting you talk about getting people to come back to your site. We might be able to help you and you might be able to help us. We are developing beta testing new software for emailing images. You drag and drop images into an email and it automatically makes thumbnails that can be clicked on to preview a larger pic. Also has titles and some other features. Point is you guys know what you need. If you want free copies in return i would love some feed back.
