Go for the 50mm 1.4 and never look back. It is a great lens. Mine gets lots of use.

I'm debating between that and a sigma 30mm right now...

I find that I have to pace back way too much to get much use out of the 50mm due to my crop body. I would like to stay true to canon and run all canon lenses, but this sigma lens I'm reading seems to be quite the lens...

decisions decisions....I am just afraid of getting a bad copy and going though all the trouble of getting it resolved. and in the future if I need work done on it, there are no sigma repair centres in Canada

On the crop body I find 50mm is too long for alot of indoor uses. When I replace my 50 f/1.8 It will be something in the 30mm range, probably the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM. Though for taking climbing the extra reach might be nice. The bottom line is if you can afford to upgrade and there isn't another lens you also would want I would do it. The 50mm f/1.8 is a good lens and a great deal for $70, but in the end it is still a $70 lens and the f/1.4 is better.

All of which are all better than my skills.

my climbing shots will be indoor 90% of the time. I found I had to step back about 10-15 feet to get a full body shot with my 50mm, and the gym I go to is way too small to allow for much backing up.

other uses: small parties, the odd car shots (not full body shots), family portaits, pets, and outdoorsy stuff like BBQs etc with family and friends.

Price wise, the sigma is pretty good....the canon 35mm? (might be 30mm) F1.8 is about 50$ cheaper here in Canada. and doesn't come with a small pouch or hood.

I'm in quite a dilemma here =( I would really appreciate the faster focussing the HSM or USM motors provide over the stadard AF on the 50mm 1.8.

i just save the 300 and use it elsewhere. if you need more ( i didnt see that big of a difference) just pp it and be done

There's a $300 difference? If so, I must have gotten a hell of a deal on mine. :p

I had the f/1.8 and have the f/1.4. There is a world of difference between the 2. I gave the f/1.8 away and would never want another one.

I'm trading my 1.8 in since i have a 14 day exchange policy.

I won't say the 1.8 is a horrible lens, because it can take some pretty nice pictures, infact my friend's 1.8 is what convinced me to get a DSLR.

You're thinking about the Canon 35/2. Great little lens and it's a nice FOV on a crop sensor.

It's pretty sharp wide open and only gets better stopped down. The only complaint you'll hear from most is the buzzy AF, but its really not that bad.

I had the 50/1.8 and it is a great price for some fast glass, but sold it because of focussing issues.

I have the 35/2 and the 50/1.4 and am torn as to which one to part with...the 35/2 is that good.

The sigma 30mm f/1.4 has feels very well built, its a touch soft at 1.4, but immediatly comes around at f/2+. The manual focus ring did feel a touch scratchy to me, but nothing to be concerned about as you'll be AF nost of the time.

I'd really think twice about the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM lens. Its very soft around the edges, kinda sorta like the 35mm f/2. The deal breaker for me is the CA issues that particular lens has. The 35mm f/2 is a little buzzy without USM, but a easy to overlook when you see its modest price tag. The 28mm f1.8 is double the cost of the 35mm, and you really only get usm and a crap load of CA issues for your money :)

I'd be all over the 30 1.4 by Sigma if I had 2x 30D's rather than a 1DMKII. Darn it!!

But sometimes unexpected things change. I guess I can live with the 1DMKII. It's tough.

I do love my 50 1.4 though.

For a college student who is was on a budget at the time, I got the 1.8 mK II. I don't regret it, though I certainly would like to have the 1.4 in my bag. I don't use my 1.8 a lot, but the times that I do use it, I'm happy with it's results.
