has anyone gotten any autofocus issues with the sigma lens? What's a good way to test the lens in the shop before actually making the purchase?

Well the thing is, right now, you are better off with the 30 since you have a 50mm(even if it is 1.8). Then later down the road, you could upgrade the 1.8 to 1.4.

You can't really compare to lens too deeply since they cover diff areas. On a 1.6 crop, the 50 makes a great portrait lens. The 30 makes a great walk around lens.

Take 3 batteries with you. Line them up in a diagonal fashion. Then focus on the middle one. Then you can see if it front or back focuses.

well, I traded up for the 1.4 50mm by Canon. in my hands the build quality seems superb.
