Philippine Woodpecker

Got close to this micro-jackhammer the other day at Subic rainforest. The Philippine Woodpecker (formerly called the Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker, Dendrocopos maculatus) is a mere 5-1/2" in total length and the smallest woodpecker in our islands. It's found in lowland and montane forest and edge, and endemic to the Philippines.

Really sharp capture Romy. Just wondered if you used manual focus, cause the DOF seems to be about 2 inches with that lens. If it's AF, then your gear is dialed in.

Mitch, I used AF on this shot and I focused on the bird's shoulder.

Per my DOF calculator, for a 12x16 print that's sharp when viewed at 10", the DOF for 700 mm, f/5.6 and about 20 feet shooting distance is roughly 0.35 inch.

Yeah, your dialed in then. I've not been able to get that kind of focus from AF at all. But I can see the thin DOF when I look closely and yours is doing it right.
